Try watching the leafs and bills in the early 80s

I vaguely recall this era. Names like Vaive, Daoust, Leeman, Iafrate, Salming and Bester come to mind. As for the Bills. Joe Ferguson. Nuff said.

You keep saying Ben Smith. I think our discrepancy here is that I don't think that Ben Smith in any way is an option - so if he IS an option, then, yeah, pretty much anyone else would do! I was of the opinion that Grundstrom, Gauthier or Rychel would supplant someone like Smith if we didn't find a decent 4th line option to perform the role.

Regardless you can't just replace Ben Smith with a guy of that calibre, because they don't slot into Smith's role. You end up displacing a guy like Kadri, Bozak or Komarov and pushing them down. Marleau would score more than Leo, to your point, but I don't recall Marleau doing a whole lot of checking people.

I disagree with you. First of all Gauthier has been less than impressive so far. I would really like to see something from him, but worse than that he had a Stamkos like broken leg last year, if he's playing for the Marlies before February, I'd be surprised. Fourth line centres, Boyle for example are usually veterans that have decent faceoff numbers. Rookie centres are generally a non-starter for the fourth line, and that eliminates Rychel and Grundstrom. Marleau will have to take less money in the hopes of a cup before he retires and he will play fewer minutes, but if there's an injury or illness to a scoring forward, he can score too.

The points are valid - and admittedly I would have preferred Boyle because it's a nice fit - but the problem I have is that the players we're talking about just don't fit that role (ie, Marleau was playing 17 minutes in SJ; Boyle was playing 11 in Toronto) in that they're not energy guys nor are they checking guys. And they're not good enough at this age to supplant the guys they would normally replace in an offensive capacity, nor do I think they are the type of players who adapt to the 3/4 line roles well. I've been wrong before. Certainly having any one of these guys on the PP over Hyman would be an improvement.

I think where we can agree is that the 4C spot is a hole (above and beyond the obvious D limitations).

Based on Mcd rumours... 30 milly for Mathews Marner and Nylander??

- robin_steele264

If McDavid's 100 points gets him 13.25, then Matthews 69 should get him 9.1425

Ya he's quite the guy! I Was at curlys on the Danforth in 1985? The leafs gathered to watch Miroslav frycer he was representing the leafs at the Allstars game and Danny, Rusty, Brubaker and Jeff Jackson were at our table and had quite the night! It was a different time for players back then! Half the team smoking darts! Other stuff! And wild drinking, a couple of guys almost got into it! And Brubaker was a pretty big guy! Danny was a little guy and funny as hell, team prankster so to speak, wouldn't be right to mention how things ended that night, but in standing up and working as doorman /security (not there)at the time,I received Russ courtnalls tickets for the next home game!(Reds)Great night and pretty wild to see the guys off the ice in a casual drunken atmosphere

How do you get won over by that? I had no choice, it was what was on the tv when I turned it on as a child. I was an innocent victim.

Yes, but I wasn't mad at the Habs, I just wanted to watch any game I could see, and the Leafs dominated the tv schedule here in Toronto, so I kind of slowly started cheering for them. The fact they lost so many games compared to the Habs back then, just made their rare victory all the more enjoyable.

My brother was older and chose to like the Habs because of the great Habs teams when he was a kid, even though he was a southern Ontario boy too. That's why as a suffering Leaf fan I am a real, true hockey fan and my brother is a (frank)ing Habs pig bandwagon part-time supporter fairweather sack of poop.

Reading at a third grade level right now so forgive me if someone already mentioned this, but I really hope when it's time to sign Matthews et. al long term, Lou gets all Louie and sneaks a briefcase under the table (or a lucrative Hakim Optical endorsement). Big fan of the "hometown discount".
