Once, after being suspended, Dave was asked what the reaction would be. "Well, I don't think there will be any Richard-like riots," he said.

Dave Semenko was one of the funniest men in hockey. One time he saw Wilt Chamberlain and said "if he could skate, I'd have to score goals."

Excuse #1: he plays big minutes against top line players. He isn't actually a top pairing defenseman, it's not his fault.

Real life example: Jimmy is not good at reading. At the current age of 7, Jimmy's parents spend hours with him every night trying to get him to read a book meant for 3 year olds.

Jimmy is a cat.

They say getzlaf is slow too. These guys still control the game and bring it to their level. I wouldn't be to concerned with his speed unless the knee injury severely limits his mobility.

Agreed! Sheary is fast!! Or how about yak? ..he's fast!! lots of fast guys!! Ya then we can out skate everone! !

1. He is old...so is Jagr
2. Thornton has been "slow" his entire career and even in this "terrible" season he produced like a top-tier centre line centre.
3. Injured? Yes. Most of the time people recover from injuries though.
4. He's better at a lot of things than JVR and this should come down to Bozak vs Jumbo, not JVR vs Jumbo.
5. True, but this is a hypothetical.
6. There are many reasons. He's still one of the best defensive centres in the game. He's better than Bozak and takes him off the PP.

- AdamFrench

I feel like I'm being argumentative, and I guess I am. But I just don't see the sell of slow guys on the cusp of _38_ with a fast team largely under 24. They fit in SJ because they have a very deliberate pace to the their game.

1. This is a fallacious argument. It's like saying Timoshov is the same age as McDavid so he should be as good. Different people develop and physically deteriorate at different rates.

2. Some people get even slower. Remember Jason Allison? I think Joe is entering that territory. He still got 50 points, so we'll see. But I wouldn't gamble on him not depreciating even more.

3. The older you get, the longer and harder it is to recover properly and fully - especially without it being a detriment to the recovery process itself.

4. This, I'd agree with. We could compare Bozak to Thornton. And until last year, Thornton would have beaten the crap out of Bozak in every comparison except maybe faceoffs.

5. I don't know. I didn't copy the other thread, so I don't know want your comment refers to. Therefore I am totally going to say maybe.

6. He is definitely a benefit on the PP. But with where (I think) his depreciating skills are, I think he'd be a detriment in most other ways.

Joe has great play making abilities...no doubt.
He got 50 pts this past season, Bozak 55....so if Joe produced like a top tier center, than what do we say about Bozaks production?
Yes Joe has been slow his entire career......now he's even slower and our kids are some of the fastest in the game.
Plus his beard wont work in Toronto. Enough said.

With McD signing his 13.2 per contract.....how does this affect Donaldson's extension with the Jays?

I'm pretty sure he said he would become a sens fan if they don't bring him here. I may be paraphrasing a bit.

Joe Thornton controls the play.
He directs speed - speed is not just how you fast you skate (btw he's not that slow), but it's the 'pace' of the game - the speed of the puck (movements). Thornton is great in directing the speed of the game - knowing when to accelerate and when to slow play down.
He's an elite passer. An elite two-way player.
At 37-38y old, he would be a great addition to the Leafs.

- MaximusAurelius

Maybe? Idk but he won't be coming here! The two of them will not uproot their young families! Their part of that community and will probably sign two year deals to keep it that way!

I think that is the defense the Bruins and the Pens threw out there against the Sens.

But Ottawa fans think their team will go further next year

Oh, and Chabot is the best player not in the NHL.

So Pierre says Leafs are getting Duchene. I think that condom is made of something that's leeching his brain.

The fact that Shea Weber is in there somewhere makes it impossible.

He's amazing, even in a wheelchair.

Agreed. We really didn't have much of a choice though. We were out 3 defensemen that series and had a 39yo Chara.

How do you feel about the Leafs getting Duchene instead of the Habs trading extremely poor mans Seguin for him?
