I just think it's strange. We buyout one guy and sign another to a deal where you have to imagine we won't be getting our 4.35 Million money's worth each year. I guess if you get better than that for at least 2 of the years while 2 of the years are "eh" it's a bit of a win no? Just weird and tough I feel like consistency is gone from a lot of players, especially defensemen. We'll see! Prove me wrong Smith!

Nobody loves G more than I do, but Smith has a whole hell of a lot left than Girardi does. He's just younger with a lot less mileage. I think that is a solid deal for him, and if people don't have unreasonable expectations, I think it will prove to be a good signing.

The Rangers still have to get Zibanenjad and Fast under contract. They need a backup goalie. And, oh yeah, probably 2 more centers.

Idk how they can afford Shattenkirk now.

Well after they sign Thornton and Radulov, and re-sign Dan Boyle, there won't be anymore money left for Shattenkirk, so tweeter is probably right.

It's free agency, man. If you want to be sure the guy will sign, you have to offer a little more than you would truly like to. Otherwise, he hits the open market and we're f'ed!
I would have liked to see it at 3.75-4, but I really felt like Smith was undersold by the Detroit media/fans and that what he brought was exactly what we needed, so I'm ok with it.

He brings intangibles too, ala Prust, Dubie, Callahan etc. I love those kinds of players

If Klein retires, they are at about $18.65 mil left. Zib could be $5 mil, Fast about $2 mil, back up goalie, $1 mil per, leaving about $10 mil to play with in free agency.

Shattenkirk would need to take no more than 6 or 6.5. Would be tough to find a center.

if Klein doesn't retire, then they are buying him out, don't see another scenario

I don't like this deal ...unless they have a trade coming ,we are basically the same defense .. just swapped Deangelo for Girardi. Not enough. Can forget about Pionk,Bereglazov and Kampfer getting chance. Forget Shattenkirk.

Does a Klein buyout mess with the cap?

That kinda sucks but so be it if that's what needs to happen. Or let him sit on LTIR, no idea why they won't just do that? Doesn't the money come off the cap then?
