SO I have been thinking of something lately, If you think of the Stepan trade in this way it helps.
How would everyone view the trade if it was this:
Stepan and Raanta for DeAngelo, 7th overall, and Shattenkirk(5 years $6.5M)
I think that would be a steal. If we can essentially replace Steps contract with Shatty's that is a good fit.
A Dcore of :
McD - Shatty
Skjei - Smith
Staal/Holden - ADA
That would be pretty good. not sure if Shatty will go for that. I am also really afraid of him after 2-3 years.

I like Andersson's outlook as chosen with the #7 pick received from AZ., who will have a great chance to make the Pro roster next season. But right now for a team that "claims" to be under a "rebuild on the fly" while Hank is still around, for purposes of contending, the Coyotes won this deal, despite taking over Stepan's full $6.5M cap hit, & whatever some didn't like with his latest play, in key, his slow skating speed.
If the Rangers do not intend to be a main bidder for Shatty, through use of the cap savings difference saved in that trade between Stepan & Deangelo, (with Raanta & his $1M cap hit having to be replaced with another backup), given their re-signing of Smith, (excessive in view for many NHL teams, but not us for one), they cannot claim then that they are also interested in contending. With a 3 years ago overall better roster and a 3 years younger "Hank +", they needed to take a 2 year chance on a nearly decade older Dan Boyle at $4.5M per season to fill that same right side spot & weakness to contend. They better have one in mind if not Shatty, prior to filling their other needs starting in key at center, unless they want to "rebuild" in reality.
