We could fit Shattenkirk & Kane...
I just don't want Shattenkirk

What u say about him offensively is true
But his PP effectiveness will be limited with us on PP2
And he's terrible defensively

In all the Shatty debates I've had on here...
everyone tries to tell me he's "good" defensively

Well if that's true...
then why is it that he's ALWAYS the worst on his team +/- usually be a fairly wide margin- compared to the rest of the defensemen on his team?
And...
he even gets something like 60% offensive zone starts, right?
Shouldn't that help his +/- stats?!!!
But he's still far worse than Jbo, Alex P, etc etc etc

Tell me how that's possible if he's actually "good" defensively

- jdfitz77

OK, I don't know where you're looking at your stats on him, but he's been a +7, +19, +20.

He's not what you're making him out to be.

Hero Chart game. All out of 10 but i think you already know that

player X:

ice time:7 Goals:5 First A:7 Shot Gen:6 Shot Sup: 5

Player Y:

ice time: 6 Goals: 4 First A: 6 Shot Gen: 6 Shot Sup: 7

both players received identical zone starts

Player X also has an edge in total passes, but Player Y has the edge in shot volume

Who are the two players?

The highest O-Zone start total of any D-man who played more than 50 games are gravel and Ghost and they got something like 45

Shattenkirk got 38.

He's better than J-Bo. i dont know that hes particularly. Shattenkirk has pretty good shot suppression numbers. Maybe not as effective down low but certainly must be effective in some areas to have numbers that good

Shattenkirk had 38% offensive zone start?
what was his defensive zone start?

Are u just looking at the Caps?
I'm more interested in his much larger body of work on StL for the past 2 years

X is Draisaitl, Y is Reinhart.

I did some digging into it reading about draisaitl reportedly asking for 9 mil.

This isnt to make reinhart seem better but much like Pastrnak i think Draisaitl's performance has been vastly overrated. I still believe he's the better player but im of the opinion that like i thought with bruins and pastrnak, the oilers are going to end up giving core money to a non core player.

I think this season, his performance was a little inflated,

But his run of 36 points in 38 games mostly at 5 on 5 with McDavid hurt the year before, was pretty damn impressive.

Also, I totally under rate Reinhart sometimes, I just am so unimpressed with him 75% of the time

i dunno how many of those came at 5v5 but yea its impressive. no doubt hes a very good player but theyre talking about extending him like hes their evgeni malkin. Not sure hes done nearly enough to warrant that kind of pay day.

Is it really ONLY me who sees the pattern?
And idk exactly what his offensive zone start times were,
but I'm guessing he started in the offensive zone more than the defensive
And I'd be even more curious to see what the zone % were for teammates

i havent changed my stance since 2014, that was and still is an unimpressive draft not because it was short on talent but in the sense that outside of one rookie season from ekblad none of these guys have turned into core players.

Nylander is probably the closest and even then alot of the numbers 5v5 are still relatively comparable to sam.

That's what I've been trying to say. Yeah, he's better, but McDavid really inflates his numbers, when Corsica was up, looking at his WOWY(sort of, best thing to call it without 30 words) He was average away from Jesus.

hes better, but hes not pay him twice as much as reinhart better (feel like a lot of us expect reinhart to fall in that 4.5-5.5 range)

Why would the last 2 years not be more reflective of his current level of play than 3 or 4 or 5 years ago?

He was average this year without McDavid, which is a smaller sample size of him being without him for 40 games last year and doing very well

And another thing to consider...
Shattenkirk is really good offensively
So when u take into account how many points he was putting up vs his teammates... and still was so far behind them +/-
How many freaking goals was he actually on the ice for compared to the others?!!!
A bunch... obviously
