Can anyone tell me why we threw away a 6th round pick on a forward who put up less than 30 pts in the O. Was it a make-a-wish foundation thing or something?
- HealthyScratch6

They got exactly what they were looking for in the 6th round.

A prospect to work with/learn from their medical team and generally do all the female dog work and see if he has what it takes to join the team.

McGregor’s pretty sharp off the ice as well. He was named the Ontario Hockey League’s West Division scholastic player of the month for January, carrying an 82 per cent average in his Grade 12 courses.

And with a course load that includes functions, biology and kinesiology, he’s not exactly padding his stats. In fact, they all play into his backup plan.

“Obviously I’d like to play in the NHL,” he said, “but if I’m not playing pro, I think it would be cool to help athletes doing something like physio or message therapy.”

I hear you...which is why he probably went in the 2nd round. Having said that, there is strong Offense in his game. he lead all OHL Rookie D-Men in scoring (66games 39 points).

This is a guy who is either going to be crap, or could be a solid top-4 NHL D-Man.

- Sandro

77% of his points came on the PP. He won't get that PP time in the NHL. He got lucky that Kingston had poop defensemen.

Look at a better player like Nurse. He got prime PP time because they had no other option, that's why PP translation from junior to the NHL is so hard. Only 2-4 slots on a team and hundreds of players to choose from.

but if you look at the new Brass in Toronto, more times then not, they are picking solid, Future NHL'ers. the faith is there in their drafting decisions...something that we havent had in Toronto, in ages.
- Sandro

I'm sorry, but you have absolutely no way of knowing (yet) that we are picking solid, future NHLers.

Every fan base thinks they are doing so. We thought Burkie was doing that.

Hell, we thought Gerry McNamara was doing that.

OK, maybe not with Gerry...

In the last three drafts, we have 2 guys who you can confidently say are solid NHL players: Matthews and Marner. Sorry, I don't give management credit for those picks. My mother could have made them.

After that, the jury is still very much out. Nobody jumps out at me as a sure-fire NHLer. Still too early to tell.

If there is one observation I would be comfortable making, it's that the new Leafs braintrust seems committed to keeping our 1st round picks - to me, that's the difference.

but we drafted this guy at 59, not 9.

if he turns into a #5 dman like nurse is tyring to become, we did good.

Dubas is such a genius, it's hard to keep track of all the great draft steals we have.

I can't believe we got Stephen Desrocher with the 155th pick! I had him ranked somewhere between 125-128!

The only thing about player development that I give them a high grade on so far is prospects we have junked in the last ~3 years. I can’ think of anyone that has gone on to do anything noteworthy in the nhl.

With all due respect to Richard Panik.

I hope he gets in a few preseason games in September before they send him back to Sweden. I'd like to see how he stacks up against quasi-NHLers.
- BetterCallSaul

I believe he's under contract so he won't be playing here till next year.

I get your point, and sarcasm aside, the Leafs have done a reasonable job managing the various aspects of the team since Shanahan emerged from his year of observaton/silence. Payrol - under much better control took out the trash to a large extent. Got very lucky winning the lottery and got a player that is at the very least exceptional. With the offensive depth, and a decent goalie, it is hard to imagine that this team will not be a contender soon, especially if a couple of d-men are added. As far as the draft goes, Liljegren is a player they should be very happy about, he was expected to go much higher - I thought they would have to move up to get him but he fell in their lap, because Yzerman decided to take Foote. I am sure Yzerman would have taken Brannstrom, but LV beat him to that pick. Bottom line is team is being run professionally now, not like a ma and pa shop team evident in the days of Ballard and Stavros. There is a cap manager, analytics are followed and a top coach was hired. Good times are coming. Habs fans and Sens fans will be very sad for a long time.

I really do love the post-draft glow (from all 31 teams' fanbases).

We all have guys who look really good.

We all have guys who will make the big club.

Although in fact, we all are just ignoring the ugly reality - most of these guys will never play in the NHL.

Remember when Dubas stole Nikita Korostelev in the 7th round of the 2015 entry draft?

Gooder times.

So people should temper their expectations? Is the message!

Just to add a little perspective to how much of a crapshoot the draft is:

For poops and giggles, I looked at the 2007 draft.

Only 44 guys have played more than 160 games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm tickled pink by the new Leafs direction.

I've said this until I'm blue in the face (yeah, you saw what I did there): since Ballard died, the problem wasn't that the Leafs didn't want to win.

The problem was they wanted to win too much....and too soon.

We are finally seeing a proper rebuilding process.
