Do they still have interest in him from what your hearing?
I really thought dealing Stepan, without taking $ back was a possibility of him still coming here.

- puckhead17

Per McKenzie, interest may not be what was expected, but still doesn't mean they don't have it. In early stages of blog on this, got home late from wedding last night and following Knicks story this am, causing slight delay. Thank god our team is not a tire fire like other resident of MSG.

LeBrun says Panthers are trying to trade Jason Demers. RHD, 4 years left at $4.5 mil. 9 goals and 28 points last year. Probably better value than Shattenkirk. They want a top-six forward in return.
- dashripdot

Stupid Panthers could have kept Reilly Smith instead of just giving him away for nothing. Despite a down year last season he still has 2/20 goal seasons at age 26

But I mean in this free agent class, the lower tier free agents/rangers rookies might be just as valuable as the top free agents.

This UFA market is awful IMO

Only way Rangers are going to really improve is through the trade market. Which doesn't have to happen on July 1. Gorton has all summer to look around for moves

Not just replying to this post, but can I pose a question?

And this might sound kinda dumb, but please hear what I'm saying and give it a thought. Why is it assumed we have to make huge impact trades and spend right to the cap chasing the Cup EVERY year?

We had a roster last year that no one could touch - WHEN THEY PLAYED LIKE THEY CAN. So, doesn't it make sense to attempt small tweeks and trust that our players can grow into a better club? And if you can do that while maintaining a decent amount of cap space and, heaven forbid, we don't win the Cup this year, then what do you have? ...a team that is a little better than they were before (~8th out of 30) AND the cap space to make a nice, big splash next summer when the UFA pool is way better (Johnny T). Not to mention prospects and young players that are one year more experienced and/or more attractive to potential trade partners.

as someone who defended Derek Stepan on a virtually constant basis, I am really surprised at how trading him has made the fanbase so ridiculously pessimistic

Further to @TSNRyanRishaug Connor McDavid mention, hearing his deal will be around $13.25M for 8 yrs. Big win for EDM to get that term, as opposed to 5

Cap figures to go up considerably in the coming years. Oilers probably banking on that. Gonna be tight in the interim with Draisaitl being due a big contract too.

I'm wondering if this will make $6m-$6.5m a year the new norm for 20-25 goal scorers?

We had what 3 years where the cap barely moved, so I'm not sure about that.
Like he can't just take $10m a year and leave some on the table for the rest of the lineup? As much as I, (and everyone else), dislike "Crysby", at least he understood he couldn't win all by himself.

man, the Oilers stepped in poop with McDavid, to screw up that many #1 overall picks and to still get him handed in their lap

God loves the Oilers and the Penguins, that's all there is to it

And at $13m a year for McDavid that's where one can maybe can argue RNH would be worth $6m a year with 40-50 points.
When the top players get more, the next level players $ will go up.

It's gone up $6M since the 2014-15 season. I wouldn't say that it's barely moved in that time period. Over $10M in since the season before that.

Growth has been slower in the last 3 years, yes. But it ebbs and flows, a few years of slow growth mean there are some years of bigger growth likely to follow in the not-so-distant future.

I think I'm behind in my thinking a few seasons, but the trend shows we could have a few years where it stagnates.
There's no guarantee it will continue in the upward trend the way it has.
Man, I must have been asleep for a few seasons when it comes to the cap.

We gotta see how it all plays out next week. I heard on the radio this morning we are kicking Radulov's tires... Not sure how I feel about that. Where the hell would he play?
