They were talking about the old days playing together on the Blackhawks and how the game and the players were different back then. A fight was a fight rather than a contrived dance discussed before the drop of the puck. And, the boys did not tap each other on the back of the head after it was over. The money wasn't as big back then, but the hearts of the players were more into the sport of hockey then they are now into the money/business of the sport. Everything is now about marketing and maximizing revenues even down to the level of the entry level players. There are no true rivalries like then where teams despised each other and each game was a competitive war. Now everybody goes through the motions and it is just not the same on an emotional level as years gone by.

Babcock loves for his dmen pairings to be split righty and lefty for balance.

The Leafs currently have:
Reilly (L)
Gardiner (L)
Zaitsev (R)
Carrick (R)

Adding Alzner (L) and Shattenkirk (R) makes sense in terms of what Babcock likes. Now the Leafs still have Marncin and Marchenko who are Lefty and Righty respectively.

Adding Alzner and Shattenkirk allows Zaitsev to move down to 2nd pairing while Shattenkirk plays with Reilly, and Carrick to move to 3rd pairing with Alzner.

Leafs also still have Lupul ($5.25mill) and Horton ($5.3mill) who they can put on LTIR and use their combined cap hit for Shattenkirk and Alzner who I see getting $6.5mill and $4.5mill respectively.
