That possibility was already mentioned about Andersson at the draft either Friday or Saturday. Maybe they felt that Andersson could immediately replace most of Stepan's roles, so they could trade Stepan to use the money on Shatty, with Trouba likely being out of the picture since Raanta was dealt as well. I'm not giving up Skjei instead to acquire Trouba, when they could have possibly acquired him in a deal centered around Miller, Raanta, a top LH d'man prospect and picks, prior to the trade with Arizona, who held up any earlier trade for Stepan, unless Raanta was included in the deal to be their #1 starter to replace Smith. The Rangers could then have asked for Hutchinson, (at $150,000 higher cap than Raanta for this year only, prior to also becoming a UFA), in that trade to be their backup to Hank.

Benoit Allaire will turn whoever has the privilege of being our next backup into a starter that's a great trade chip by next offseason. Talbot, Raanta, ???

Thornton wants three years, wonder how much that narrows the market.

So? That doesn't change that I want him at 7.5x3.

I'm with Tom on this one. No to Thornton, even if it was a year

If it is a one year deal, I am fine with Thornton. He can help the team win next year

Our wingers would have to have some dull ass skates. Doubt he can keep up with the way AV has built this team

Isn't he out until at least middle of the season?

Edit: just read he's expected to be ready by beginning of the season.

This free agent market really does suck. Wrong year to have all this cap space.

I wish they could upgrade via the trade route but they already traded their two best trade assets unless they move a Miller etc

Pretty sure we already upgraded through trade. Deangelo is going to be just as good as or better than Shattenkirk. If we're smart, we stay away from overpaying this offseason. If we can get Gagne at a decent price we'll be set up the middle. Let's hope hope Islanders have a terrible year and maybe Tavares decides to go elsewhere.
Maybe he decides to stay in NY but with a better team

Deangelo's defensive game scares me though. Idk if we can count on him to be a top 4 guy right away. He still needs to improve.

I'd rather go with younger guys (Deangelo,Pionk, Kampfer)than get locked into another crappy long term deal. Shattenkirk might seem like a good idea now, but we'll regret in a couple years. Maybe Dumba still available? If we can get for picks or prospects. Honestly, besides Gagne, the only other FA I'm interested in is Kovulchuk. If somehow we didn't have to give up much, and could sign to a reasonable 2 year deal. He'd add something we need. An actual pure sniper.

All eyes are going to be on Shatty on Saturday. I think everyone expects the Rangers to sign him. Wonder if Gorton has something else up his sleeve

Gorton doesn't seem to be that guy. He let Yandle walk. Just dumped Stepans 6.5 for next 4 years. Traded Brassard for Zib. Just don't see him giving 7 year, 6-7 million deal. Seems to prefer getting younger. Maybe trade Nash to ducks for Vatenan? Retain some money.

Found a cool stat. Only 22% of 1st rounders play more than 2 seasons in NHL. If their are no mcdavids or Matthews in draft, which their wasn't, than why not take the guy you believe in most. As far as taking Anderrson too soon in draft......wtf do we know about what other teams were hot on him as well. I read on SNY by Ritter that LA was taking him if he was available. Let's just hope that he becomes what NYR thinks he can be co.e and move on to filling the rest of the roster
