But like why can't Andersson be great? Cause some rankings said he wouldn't?
- TPC

He might be great. Which best scenario Rangers build around him going forward. I doubt it though.

Exceptional and great are not the same. I never expected anybody to come close Mcdavid or Matthews.

Meh, to me the words mean the same.

Tyler Seguin is great. Mcdavid is exceptional. Kopitar is great, Crosby exceptional.

I was hoping when him and Yandle were looking over at the other table, it was like a giant Kit Kat Bar or something that got him excited

Well we wont know till a few years down the road when we could compare the players drafted after him. Until then I'm all in on the Andersson train.

College goalies Huska and Wall paying their own way for developement camp, gotta love that, no Tkachyov on the roster although I thought it was said he was coming to it, in fact there a few Russians I thought we might pick late and passed on, 2 went undrafted in Minulin who's in Juniors and Pavel Shen who played in the MHL, one did get picked Ivan Chekhovich by the Sharks

As long as we're able to draft a Tedenby, Matteau, Corrente and Bergfors

I think Conte is available? He finds the 1st round gems.

Friday night was a depressing one for true Rangers fans on this site, with the way some showed that they already"know" the final poor and short lived career results of their two 1st Round picks.
There is no guarantee in a draft that any pick not being a McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Laine, etc, ranked level pick will ever pan out positively as expected. The hockey world media & fans CAN ONLY RELY ON the OPINIONS of a few main draft experts, or other sources to just know those other players even exist. But numbers alone do not tell the true story for those others. Plus, draft experts cannot watch every full game played of every potential draftee, to guarantee being 100% accurate in their opinionated rankings. Start right here as proof with all who blew it on Hank, and also a non drafted Girardi back then at his extent.
Furthermore, this was a weaker overall draft class than recent ones to make it that big of a deal, for the ones here that had viewed our two, 1st Round selections as if the franchise was ready to fold. (Oh, and yes, we were cursed to have an overall #7 pick only since it was a weaker draft class this time!!)
That's why teams have scouts all over the hockey world TO KEY ON & follow certain type players to fit their needs, when having no shot at picking a can't miss & elite likely future star. The Rangers need was for depth at center, and that's the case, like it or not soon in the near future.

What do you think of Sam Gagne as a #2/3 Center?

Then a half decent back up with a lot to prove would be Brian Elliot

All depends on defining "rebuild on the fly." I will cover that in the next blog, because right now, I am unsure what it means.
- airjan23

It's not for purposes of keeping fans in the stands, because most of the crowd at Rangers games in recent years is all who took advantage of corporate gifts. These are not the fans as those were prior to 2000 or slightly later, & who were priced out of MSG by the rising net cost to attend a game today. It is also why the Garden crowd seems dead in its noise level during many games, so much to the point that the visiting team takes it to being their advantage in playing at the "World's Greatest Arena".
It's as if they determine a "rebuild on the fly" as meaning that Hank will stay for the remainder of his contract, in order to take "CHANCES" through various means, to win a Cup while he is around. If he sees that this team's chances are closer to none, then if he surely has a Cup win as his ultimate goal, he would be willing to waive his NMC to be traded somewhere to a true contender that feels they need him to do so.

Wouldn't mind him, posted a few pages ago he's someone to look at but I think he's going to want $$ and at least a 4-5 year term. Last year was his show me year. I think Bonino at 3 years could be a nice addition.

The only 3 players in free agency I wouldn't mind seeing the rangers pay 3mm or more for are Smith, Shattenkirk, and Radulov. All the centers suck and are going to be pay too overpaid. Shatty and Rad will cost close to 7, but they actually have the talent to be difference makers. Term is the big question mark with them.

I want nothing to do with 4.5mm contracts for a guy like Gagner or Bonino

I definition of "Rebuild on the Fly" would be staying a competitive as possible without giving up assets you see in the plan 2-3 years from now. Obtaining asset with contacts that are expiring or could be a hindrance in the future (Stepan). So with that being said, maybe we do look at Jumbo Joe one year as this FA class is almost as bad as the draft class. He should help the PP then if we don't think it's our year move him and Nash at the deadline for picks / prospects.

Just cannot trade away picks anymore. They have yet to work out.

If Bonino is going to get 4.5 no way I go anywhere near him. Gagner I fully expect to get 4+ and that's why I don't think he's realistic. Radulov's demands in MTL are outrageous and can't see them getting rid of 26 year old Stepan making 6.5 for the next 4 years to sign 31 year old Radulov for the next 7 years at around or more than the cap hit Stepan had.

I don't see Gagne jumping from $650k to $4+mil. And if he does would not touch him with a 10ft pole.

Give Radulov 7.5mm for next 3 years and I'm cool with it. He's not the center we need but he's still a difference maker and can take over games.

He took a show me contract last year. I absolutely expect him to get between 3.5-4.5 by someone desperate.

You guys think the Rangers went with Andersson because he could be NHL ready today? Seems like a safer pick, and he's already got a solid build and frame. Maybe they went with him to immediately replenish our center depth
- rangerdanger94

That possibility was already mentioned about Andersson at the draft either Friday or Saturday. Maybe they felt that Andersson could immediately replace most of Stepan's roles, so they could trade Stepan to use the money on Shatty, with Trouba likely being out of the picture since Raanta was dealt as well. I'm not giving up Skjei instead to acquire Trouba, when they could have possibly acquired him in a deal centered around Miller, Raanta, a top LH d'man prospect and picks, prior to the trade with Arizona, who held up any earlier trade for Stepan, unless Raanta was included in the deal to be their #1 starter to replace Smith. The Rangers could then have asked for Hutchinson, (at $150,000 higher cap than Raanta for this year only, prior to also becoming a UFA), in that trade to be their backup to Hank.

Wouldn't want anything to do with Radulov even at 5mil.
Plan should b to get young or short 1year contracts to be able to shed at years end.

Gagne is only 27 years old, only made $650k last year with pretty good speed. Hate to say it but if I'm targeting a C he is th only one on a multiple year deal until the ask is more than $3.5
