Honestly though. This is close to the same price we payed for Hamilton. Who was younger and better.
- flamminghead

Hamilton was a big FU to Chia whom supposedly was threatening to offer sheet the B's for him after causing the whole mess in Boston.

Hamilton was not shopped around to the rest of the league. Also, our pics next year should be later than mid teens.

Reading on the NYI thread that Hamonic's mom is sick again. Could be part of the reason that he was moved. If you trust posters on Hockeybuzz that is!

Obviously excited for any splash that BT makes, but it does seem like a pretty steep price

One of my buddies mentioned his possession stats are actually worse than Russell's...is that possible!?

- cpltanto

Haha, nope not even close to being possible

Todd mentioned it, but Hamonic had a down year last year. He still had possession stats similar to that of a top 4 dman though.

I fully expect Hamonic to rebound playing with Brodie on a nightly basis. I could see us having two of the best pairings in the league next year. It was a steep price, but we will forget all about those picks when we see that top 4 in action

Tree seems to have no problem trading away picks. This will eventually bite them in the ass. Reminds me of the Darryl Sutter days. We've basically given up a first and three seconds for Smith And Hamonic.

Hamilton was an outright steal & don't expect that to happen too often.
I'm ok with this deal. That was a pretty boring draft last night. No one was interested in making moves because it just a perceived weaker draft. Islanders weren't interested in the 2017 1st. I think Tre pulled the trigger on this because Stone was probably looking for more money & longer term than what Hamonic brings. This doesn't remind me of Sutter days at all. There were a lot of teams in on Hamonic. Value is there. Sutter used to bring in these old star players all the time, Tre doesn't. I love what we have in our top 4, & the minutes both pairings can eat up means we can give our young guys 8-10 minutes to cut their teeth next year. Im ok with this deal, didn't have to give up Bennett or any of our young bluechip dmen on the farm.

The Islanders 100% wanted the Flames 1st last night and Treliving was smart not to move it.

If we didn't have a full cupboard then I'd tend to agree. Sutter traded away picks when we didn't have anybody coming up through the system.

At this point in the rebuild I'd much rather us trade picks than those prospects we've been developing. They will be the key to turning us in to an actual cup contender.

If one or more of Rass, Kylington or Fox turn into what we think they could be, then we might be shopping one of our big 4 in a few years. That could allow us to re-coop any lost picks/prospects (or help us fill any holes that may arise). I could see that being BT's long term sustainability plan.

Edit:

Plus, who needs early draft picks when we have 4th rounders and pick #166!!

Russell 4 milly
Hamonic 3.75

Oilers management is in mass confusion when they don't get first overall and they actually have to think. God did they blow it

Yeah I agree. We are a young team. Have lots of depth and Goalie and D. That depth can be traded for pics or Wing depth.

Also might make Gio somewhat more dispensable down the line?

I linda want the Flames to pick up an older D that can mentor these younger guys on the bottom pair.

I am still trying to figure out if they resign Steeger or not.

the bottom 6 has:

C-Bennet, Janko, Stajan, Lazar, Hamilton
W- Lazar, Hamilton, Bouma, Chiasson, Brouwer, Hathaway
Up and comers- Mangiapane, Klimchuck

Seems like we need to shed some bottom 6 depth and not add. But I would like to bring back Versteeg for the offense.

EDIT: And FFS buy out BOUMA!

Yours is not really a popular opinion on the Oil thread these days. I think in a couple years you will be able to say I told you so.

If we don't bring in a top 6 winger I'd like to re-sign Versteeg as well. We need to be careful at the contract we give him though. He's getting older and he's always been injury prone. Anything over 3 years x 2.5 million and I'd walk.

I think Stajan would have some value if we retained some salary--might be a trade deadline candidate like Glencross was.

It would be nice if we could flip a few of those guys for a 4th or 5th next year though. We've been hitting it out of the park with those picks recently (whatever scout is responsible for these late round gems needs a friggin raise )

Hamonic is on a great deal for the next 3 years and we did not have to give up Bennett. This is a win for us. Did give up a lot, but our top 4 is just excellent and without a doubt we are up there for best D in the league. Now all we need is a top line RW

Hells yeah. But I feel they will give Ferland another kick at the can. Cheapest choice.

Besides that not sure if Philly is going into remodeling mode and would care to trade Simmonds. But it would cost an arm and a leg, and we just gave a stank load to get Harmo.

Hamonic is exactly the #4 we needed. He fits in with our age group, the character of the team, and he is signed to a great contract.

We have now stolen Hamilton at the ripe age of 22 and locked him up to a cap friendly number for his prime years, while the oilers paid a similar price for Reinhart, who never played meaningful games for them... and is now lost for nothing in expansion. So I am ok with treliving's asset management there... now we get Hamonic on another cap friendly deal locked up through his prime years at under 4 mill and Edmonton has Russell for 4x4...

No complaints here. We are building the right way and still have some good prospect depth.

I hope sometime in the next 3 years dougie and Travis hit a guy at the same time... then I can call it a ham sandwich...

(frank) it, I don't think people are amped up enough about us having one of the best top 4s in the league. I don't even want us to wast the $$$ on Stone now. Roll with Kulak and a kid on the bottom pairing.

What makes Travis Hamonic a very special human being (and a great hockey player):

big price to pay, but arguably have the 2nd best D in the league (and VERY close to being as good as NSH)

Tyler Wotherspoon is the only guy from the 2011 draft left that you guys could have. I guess we'd be willing to give him up for a 2nd

I'm expecting a big year from Brodie. If he can step up his game to the level it was a few years ago with Gio (or even surpass it ) then I could see people ranking us ahead of NSH.

Yup & I think Kulak is one of the bottom pair, thank you Vegas & Wotherspoon & Andersson will probably battle for the other spot. I like it!

Just think, both Brodie & Hamonic are the same age, have 3 years left on bargain deals & will be 29 when their contracts come up. If in the next 2 years Kylington & Andersson rock it, we will have teams lining up to trade for Brodiee or Hamonic or even giving us a top5 pick + other assets for Kylington or Andersson. & we can do that knowing Fox & Valimaki are close behind & pushing for a roster spot.
