What burns me is the reach on Frost. I was following mock drafts since the last draft and keeping an eye on forwards. This guy never popped up in the first round.

If the Flyers were thinking skilled forward with the 27 pick, there were a lot more options (Kostin, Popugaev) and Frost would have been available at 44, whereas those other guys won't.

I'm guessing there was a scout who really, really, really liked what he saw. I get it, but again, he would have been available later.

Dallas looks like they need D and they must get rid of one goalie.
It would be nice to deal AMac for Niemi. I doubt it would happen, but Dallas does seem like a trade partner today ..

Plus, Dallas has lots of cap space, and not many picks today; they only have their own picks in rounds 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7. They have no third-rounder. Perhaps something could be put together.

Lehtonen ($5.9m) and Niemi ($4.5m) are both UFA after this season. I'd be OK with any combination of Read ($3.625m for 1 yr) or Lehtera ($4.7m for 2 yrs) or AMac ($5m for 3 yrs) or Weiss ($2.35m for 3 yrs) being involved, plus a 3rd/4th rounder this year

Can you define what a legit chance is? Thanks
- rinaldo

"Legit" as in an abbreviation for "legitimate," something that is able to be defended with logic or justification. So it is a chance that can be defended with logic or justification.

Bill just cited a publication that had Frost ranked 21st, and Bob Mac had him within the first few picks in the 2nd.

I hope it's a reach as much as the Forsberg pick was.

Wait and see approach about Schenn deal. Thrilled with Patrick.. I will say this. The core needed a change. This group just didn't get it done.. Wouldn't be upset to see more done today with regards to moving another big piece.
- landros 2

Core did and still does need a change. They didn't help the current team at all with this move. They are nowhere near a cup Contending team. How will clode and jake look in 4 years?

Can't wait to give Simmonds that lucic contract

As for losing Schenn, statistically, he put up good numbers, but he was woefully inconsistent--streaky. Reminded me of how Read was at the beginning of last year and just disappeared--cept Schenn would magically reappear at times.

Given the length of his contract and the fact he did produce decent numbers, it's similar to Hartnell and Umberger--jettisoning a longer contract to retain talent down the road (Simmonds and Provy).

Also, I am reminded of what Voracek said about blowing up the core. I don't think the message was intentional/direct, but Hextall demonstrated nothing is etched in stone, and if he can improve the team, anyone (save Provorov and maybe Patrick) can go. It might serve to light that fire under Voracek and Couturier.

If the team doesn't get competitive (not saying they need to win a cup), then I can see the Flyers pushing to move G and/or V next summer.

No, I don't hope that.

"I haven't been around much in the past, so you guys may have discussed... but what constitutes a "franchise" player? What is this tag that Nolan is supposedly never going to attain? Is franchise only reserved for Crosby, Malkin, McDavid, Matthews? What about guys like Kopitar, Getzlaf, Bergeron? Are they "franchise" players or no?"

I would say McDavid, Crosby and Matthews are generational players. One who only come around, normally, once in a generation.

The rest you listed would be franchise type players...ie: the face of the franchise, the best player, etc. Malkin would be a franchise player on any team not including Crosby.

It's sort of top 10 protected. If top 10, the Blues have the choice to keep the pick, but if they do, we get their 2019 1st with no protection and a 2020 3rd.

Do you know if top 10 protection means pre or post lottery placement?

I liked Schenn. Quite often, he was the only flyer who showed up when they were getting manhandled. And he was their best player the last time they were in the playoffs. His main problem was that he came in with the " best player not in the NHL" tag.
His skills were great for juniors. But at the NHL level, each aspect of his game is probably "average to above average". To be an NHL star, you need to be "great" in at least one aspect or skill component.

What organization do you scout for?

I (frank)ing hate when fans talk about reaching, like their basement level scouting means jack.

Yeah it's a confusing mess. Definitions get changed all the time. Like what is a generational player now? Crosby, McDavid...no question. Matthews...really? I guess Stamkos, Tavares and Ovechkin are generational players as well. So generational players come every 2-3 years now, which logically means they should be called "Seasonal players".

Winner winner chicken dinner......let's let the scouts do their job....they have really made some decent picks lately. Guys knock players they have never seen, just because "some guy" says its so.

I can only speak for myself, but I look at a franchise players as being dominant 1st line forwards and #1 Dmen. The guys who win Hart and Norris trophies and unless careers are cut short by injury, they are 1st ballot hall of famers when their careers end.
- BiggE

I can agree with most of this. Franchise players are players you build around and are staples of the team through highs and lows. Not sure I would call Franchise players locked HoFers.

Bill,

Terrific analysis. I agree on the Schenn trade, it will be years. Prospect rankings are very subjective. Frost just turned 18, and for the criticism levied they only want to pick mucker and grinders, Frost is outside that box.

For me, trading Schenn means they have a lot of faith in Patrick, Lindblom, and Konency. Frankly, I'm with this strategy.

Believe it means if they finish with a pick in the top 10 spots.
