Mason is a reliable hockey player in the sense that he is reliably mediocre. You always know he will give minimal effort, produce nothing, and sometimes fall asleep on the bench, or even during play. Regularly falls down on his skates for seemingly no reason, hates contact, and cannot even complete basic plays. How a player goes a season recording 0 points, despite top line minutes, is a question our staff had trouble answering.

But what we will most remember about Mason -- for the rest of our lives really -- is that in one of our viewings, we witnessed an opponent getting into a scrum with Mason, only for him to skate to the bench crying. And not only crying, but screaming noises that defy explanation until the stands went quiet. He went to the locker room and did not re-enter the game. In all our years scouting, we have never witnessed anything like that.

The only upside to Mason's game is that we won't have to watch him ever again.

In other news, the Rags trading Stepan and Raanta to move up to #7, and then using that pick to take Lias Andersson was just priceless. Andersson seems like a can't miss NHL player, but there isn't a single scout out there who thinks his ceiling is anything more than 2nd line center, and many think he will top out as a very good 3C.

The fact that Mittlestadt, Vilardi, Necas and Suzuki were all still on the board just makes it even better. I am so going to enjoy watching them sink into mediocrity and worse over the next few seasons.

I already talked about Frost a lot last night (I loved it), and Ratcliffe/Strome on last page, but if you want me to give any more info on them or ask a question, speak or forever hold yo piece.

I like the Strome pick...........his game is very solid & with improved skating could be a really good pick.

He knows it's a weak point, now let's see what kind of work he puts in with it to make it a non-issue.

Being a 4th round pick it's a nice risk/reward area

I'm all for a 4th round pick being a high risk/high reward kind of pick.
Better than picking a guy who has little to no chance of increasing his abilities further than what they are when drafted.

Having 2 kids has kept me so out of the loop, but from what I've read I'm pleased from the draft overall.

A future star with their 1st pick, 2 more excellent prospects with the next 2 picks, a goalie who could be a real sleeper in the 3rd round and a bunch of low risk/high reward picks from the 4th round on. IMO, they had an excellent draft.

The strength of the Hextall regime appears to be the draft...agree 100% on the draft results. The Schenn deal makes sense if they want to give some of these young guys the proper opportunities. Hextall doesn't want to say it out loud but they may have 6-7 rookies next year....and playing key rolls at that. Should be very entertaining.

I have no problem with a bunch of kids in the lineup. There will be growing pains, and there is a good chance, especially if they only get average goaltending, that they will miss the playoffs again next year, but honestly, I can live with that. 2018 is shaping up to be a very deep draft and having 2 mid to high picks in the 1st round works for me.

There is no doubt in my mind that no matter where they finish next year, they will be a playoff team in 18-19 and a Cup contender no later than 20-21 or even in 19-20 if one of the young goal prospects matures quickly.

The Schenn trade is interesting and a bit frustrating in that I was kind of looking forward to seeing what a full season of Schenn playing with Couts could do together at 5 vs 5 hockey. That combo I think had unrealized promise.

If you're in a desperate situation, you can often hammer on a 19mm socket to get them off. Stupid things vary in size, but this often works.

The Schenn trade is interesting and a bit frustrating in that I was kind of looking forward to seeing what a full season of Schenn playing with Couts could do together at 5 vs 5 hockey. That combo I think had unrealized promise.

I think the Rangers got more for Stepan but the Isles didn't get quite as much for Hamonic. The trade allowed the Flyers to get two more high end prospects they liked as well as a first rounder for next year. All for someone that wasn't in the plan.
