He is going to develop an allergy in 5 years.
I was just thinking about a mysterious allergy as I read through this thread before I came to this. |

Tanner, there you go with "luck" again.
Oshie is a good, productive, top line 2-way player. Show me a player of his quality signing a contract at his stage of their career for under $6 mil AAV. You get him for less money but for longer term. It helps you win now. You can buy him out, ship him to Arizona, or put him on LTIR when the time comes.
Also, you mention that his game doesn't age well because he likes to "mix it up" and then you mention Thornton? Last I saw, Thornton likes to "mix it up." And yes, I'm talking about Joe, not Shawn. |

The length is not good. But he is the same age as the rest of the core. The caps had 2 choices, either attempt to continue trying with this core or try to make some changes. It seems as they have decided to continue with this core. Ovechkin will be 32 this fall, Backstrom 30 by years end. Their window is now, by the 4th year the rest of the core will be in decline. This contract while maybe looking bad by that time, probably won't have much impact, as the team more then likely won't be competing.
They have basically sacrificed the future 4 years down the road to go for it in the next 3. Look at some of the contacts on the kings and the Hawks. They did the same. The caps now just need to win to make it worth it.[/img] |

Caps RFA's have to licking their chops - if Oshie gets this - they must be giddy over what they have coming -
Really need to hear an explanation of this deal - cause I didn't see anyone else giving him remotely this kind of term and $ -
Makes the Russell deal look good by comparison .... just kidding - dozerD10

Insane is a good term for signing Oshie for this long. When he gets another concussion he will be the next Clarkson or Horton. I do like Oshie a lot but his strong supporting cast is why he got 33 goals. Way too much money and way too long, but I hate the Caps so why do I care, lol |

One shi*y contract-length wise. I was hoping to see him back on a 5 year deal max. The Caps gave Oshie one hell of a deal. I have lost confidence is GMBM as this will be one albatross of a contract. |

yeah, I'm sure BM signed Oshie without knowing if he'd sign his RFAs or not. - Blackstrom2
My point is that they valued the wrong player. |

I like the dollars. Not the term. I actually believe oshie would have made more dollars in the free agent market. Even on a seven year term. He took a cut for term. 6m is hyperbolic for your purposes and it's a little less.
I appreciate your jagr and Thornton allusion. These are generational players in the ilk of McDavid, Matthews, Laine, shiefle(yes) and eichel of our generation.
Not everyone is looking ahead Tanner, they want to win now. Oshie is a good player. Ladd and okoposo got similar and they are lesser players. Although I would want the latter on my team as well. It won't hurt them for 2-3 years and then it will. Ovechkin is their lifeblood and they are willing to try their best around him. They have no choice and they know their RFAS are going to give them a discount.
Good piece though. It does hurt this team long term. Just remember this is a win today team. - MarkStoned
I hear what you're saying, but I think they should have let someone else overpay for Oshie. He's OK, but if he shot the same shooting percentage he did in every other year of his careerr, he would have had 17 goals, not 33. |

I am sorry, but if you think a guy who had his career high when he was 30, and whose shooting percentage jumped by 15 points wasn't lucky, I have to question your ability to analyze anything. |

Overpay for Oshie? With losing Schmidt, the defense now has a glaring hole. Letting Oshie walk, when he could have easily got 6mil elsewhere would have left multiple holes in the offense. He isn't just a goal scorer and is played in every situation. Who else on the market could have filled his role for less money? I don't agree with the terms, but the money is almost spot on. |

Wahhhhhhhh!!! Keep crying Tanner.
Keep calling it "luck" and we will keep taking pictures with the Cup.
A personal of normal intelligence can figure out that a team with a much better goalie over a 7 game series deserves to win that series and WILL win that series most of the time. The Caps outshot the Pens, but the Pens received phenomenal goaltending from Fleury, while Holtby (a Vezina candidate) choked. That's not luck. The goalie is 1 of the 6 players on the ice. He's part of the team. Fleury outplayed Holtby, period.
The Caps lack of discipline and lack of leadership showed. On winning teams, you won't see a guy perform a lavish celebration being down 4 goals in a playoff game and down in the series. We saw that from the Capitals.
The Caps outshot the Penguins, but were they all great quality shots? Were they all prime scoring chances? Does the team with the most shots and possession always win? No. Not if the other team's goaltender is far superior and their scoring chances are better and their players are winners instead of choke artists.
Keep crying about luck though... Have fun raising another Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Champion banner. |

Well I don't own a Crosby sweater and I have no idea what you are talking about.
BTW: If Crosby's a "whiner" then you must surely be upset he stole your bottle of formula. Also, how's the Pens winning another Cup at your team's expense induced colic coming along? Still up late at night crying and having your Mommy have to rock you to sleep?
Seriously though; All kidding aside, as one man to hopefully another man...FFS grow the hell up and stop being be "that" guy. No one will ever take you seriously if you're going to be an obnoxious excuse making fan boy. If you go through life that way you'll be one miserable, angry and friendless person if you aren't already. We get it, you are mad that the Penguins won and you didn't, but stop with the BS that implies it wasn't anything other than that. You come off as a jilted high school girl who's BF left her for a cheerleader.
So please stop. Someday hopefully you can experience a Cup win in D.C. and you'll see how lame and childish all this excuse making is when other bitter dolts start doing it to you, but I tell you what; if you keep this up I won't be one of them congratulating you (not that you'd care) because you'll stop deserving it IMO because you're a sore loser and nobody likes those people, at least I don't. |
