Russell is also 30 when he's signing this as opposed to 34 when Ference signed his. I'd say the roster circumstances surrounding both even out. The cap implications are the only major negative.

I don't know what Corsi says, but pretty sure Russell is better at the defense than Ference. Also to my knowledge he doesn't have a lingering hip issue that will be forcing him into retirement anytime soon.

I could care less about the money- its really not as large of an issue right now as it is the 4 year term with NTC... I would have been fine with a 2 year 4.5 per even... At least we know what we are getting with Russell (Oiler positives )

I don't like the contract, but it's not the end of the world and the contract is structured in a way that suggest Chiarelli knows that Russell is likely to decline.
