Here's an idea: trade Letang.

Trade him for a top pairing defenseman+, just not an elite one like Letang, but one that isn't injured all the time. Get a 2C from the same team, sign a FA defenseman (or two) and now no need for Letang insurance.

Letang couldn't have great return value. His injuries are serious and his contract is only worth it when he's at his best. Might as well keep and pray. Can always throw him on ltir and get the cap space

I could live with that. Decent player on a decent contract. Pick #31 highly unlikely to amount to anything.

I agree. Maybe some team out there would overpay for him, though. Of course, you'd have to get Letang to agree to it depending on the terms of his NTC. He and his contract could soon become an anchor. But yes, as Chicago has shown, LTIR can do wonders if needed.

Conditional pick is 1st round protected. Blues can push it to 2019 at the cost of a 3rd.

I know they also took a bad contract, but 2 1sts for Schenn is great IMO. Patrick steps in on an entry to his spot. Flyers putting together a serious young core when you add in the young D.
