The words of a hockeybuzz GM
- Mononoke

I'm not a GM of anything. That title can be bestowed on those who think they know everything about every player right into the 6th round of the draft.

Here is what some don't know, or don't understand. There comes a time for teams when you go for it. When you forget about the future somewhat and go all in. When a team is at that point, every NHL GM would go for it. That is the ultimate goal which is to win the Cup. If you never get there, what's the point? Just to be a decent team every year?

Yes he is, as he should. What is the sense of having Ovechkin and all the other players if you don't go for it when you have the opportunity?

If re-signing Simmonds is what has to be done to give the team a legitimate shot at the Cup then I'm 100% behind it.

- MJL

Well that's the issue. I don't think what the Caps did is stupid for their short term success, but it certainly hurts them long term. They're also one of the best teams in the NHL. The flyers aren't, and as it looks an extension like that would severely handcuff the young core of the Flyers chances of winning a cup in their prime and would likely guarantee some of them are moved

The Oshie deal is a trade off. Lower AAV for security of term. The Caps are in a position to win now. McClellan doesn't care about the 8 years. If they don't win, he won't be around
- MJL

the owner should care about 8 yrs for a 30 yr old player.

if the caps go on to win 2 or 3 cups then yeah i agree that Oshie's contract "won't matter" in the sense that they will gain some leniency with the fans for a few years. if they continue to flounder in the 2nd round, that contract is going to be a huggggeeee problem going forward.

quick correction, no matter what, that contract is going to become a problem. but if they win, it's like 5% less of a problem i guess

I'll put doesn't matter in context. It's a gamble and it's one most GM's would take. 5 years from now, 5.75 AAV isn't going to be a lot. The odds are high that Oshie will decline to the point of not living up to the contract. If the Caps aren't going to go for it at this point, then they might as well have a fire sale and move a lot of players.

I think the 8 years is not as big of a deal as it is made out to be. The owner wants to win, I would assume.

I think there is a variable missing in your equation and that's re-signing Simmonds could increase the chances of the Flyers core winning a Cup in the future. He could remain a very good player well into his 30's.

It might. But there's no denying it increases the likelihood of losing a young player and or being forced to sign bridge contracts
