BINGO
Buy high, sell low.
Wait. - The-O-G
The problem was more that he'd been "low" two years in a row now and next year is an impending cap crunch. At some point low becomes the new normal. And even if he did see a resurgence (unlikely without top PP time), we would've likely had to move him for less next year before McDavid's 2nd contract kicked in (see Chicago). |

The thing with Eberle is he's one-dimensional... and if he isn't scoring important goals, he's pretty much useless.
I've been waiting for years to see if he would turn up his physical game in the playoffs (cause he never did in the regular season) and he didn't. Even just a bump to throw his opponents' timing off... nothing.
He lost his spot on the PP to a 4thliner who happens to be able to hit the net on a cross-seam one-timer from <15 ft out.
Chia's new team is about bigger guys who can play. Strome fits that. Has offensive upside and I'm pretty sure he's gonna score >50 pts if he plays with either Connor or Leon for most of next year. If he has to carry a line as C due to injury - all bets are off, but he's gonna be pretty damn good with either of those guys. |

I hear yeah...it wasn't the "best" time to trade Eberle. But they pretty much had to. That's all i'm saying. |

Agreed... Strome is being interviewed right now and is "Super excited-Honestly I am loss for words" we need players with that enthusiam and vigor! And he can skate, goes to the rough places and alot more sandpaper than Ebs... He also credited Doug Weight for his gains... Obviously disliked Capuano... |

Schooled was certainly a stretch as it's not not like pc went in and got convinced strome is the equal player. Pc wanted a somewhat comparable player For way cheaper.
Amd it could work out . Strome has skills. But on track record it's tough to swallow.
I just think it's a huge offensive gamble to take on a squad thats trying to win now. And it's not like puju amd cagg couldn't play with ebs there too. You've handicapped yourself offensively and aren't even A proven contender yet
The real crux is what he does with the savings now... - Ihateallofu
Don't forget Strome's first season. The kid was absolutely clutch and was without a doubt our best two way forward. He lost some fans the last couple seasons but I wasn't one of them. I really think a change of scenery and being away from our former chimp of a coach is going to do wonders for him. Don't be down on this trade just yet developing players is not the Islanders specialty. I really think he's going to do well for the Oilers and make us look stupid. |

He was playing better the day after Capuano was fired. I remember Strome being sat a game and when the press asked him why he sighed and said he didn't know. Capuano really held him back. I'm not saying he will be a superstar for you guys but I bet he puts up better numbers this year. |

What now? - The-O-G
He's hearing a possible 4 to 4.5mil and 4 years for Russell. That could be just him repeating what Russell's camp asked for and saying that they're closer to finding a fit that works for both sides, though.
Like, I actually don't mind the player. He's a reasonably effective second pairing guy that surrenders Corsi to consistently allow fewer goals relative to his teammates (6 out of 6 years). I just can't agree with giving a 30 year old shot blocking Dman 4 years unless it's below 3mil. |

What's the market for a 27 year old guy who scores 20-25 goals and 50-60 points, and makes 6 million dollars a year? I just don't think there was a lot of value out there for him. Maybe if he had a decent playoff run it would be different but all he did was confirm a lot of the doubts that have been surrounding him for the past few seasons. - Jeffmt
If Eberle makes 4 million per season this trade doesnt happen. I blame Tambellini and Mac-T for handing out that horrid contract. |

I can understand the emotional context of this, but the argument isn't really fairly poised. Eberle has carried an unusually high shot % and last year it was lower than average for the first time in 3 years whereas for the first time in his career Strome has reached an average Shooting percentage.
In Strome's previous years, he should probably be approximately a 20 goal player, and Eberle probably should, too.
Noting that a 21 or 22 year old player is bringing down the possession metrics of a star player is a bit of an unfair comparison. It should be said that 26 year old Eberle brought down the possession metrics of the 19 year old kid he played with.
I like Eberle. He had a great penchant for being clutch. This isn't all doom and gloom. The Oilers have capspace to ensure they can keep McDavid and Draisaitl with wiggle room over a longer period. - Monkeypunk

Not that bad of a contract at the time; that was the going price for young forwards producing more than 60 points. I blame Eberle himself more than anyone else. An inability to grow and adapt his game led to two down years in a row on a one-dimensional winger. Doesn't make for an easy sell. |
