You don't need to explain the pros and cons of having integrity as a GM.

He still could have told Bob that that is the nature of going into an expansion with depth like that. Doesn't need to burn any bridges. Could still have gotten Vats out of the division.

We'll see in a few years. I'll be sure to bring it up and be a real douchebag about it if Vatanen is the reason the Golden Knights lose an important game or two.

Sure; terrible, terrible policy. But.. he could have agreed to a Theodore deal and then gone rogue when it came time to submit his picks.

Or just say "tough luck" and force Murray to trade Vatanen.

Both options would translate to a divisional rival losing a very good defenseman. Theodore (frank)ing sucked ass last year. Not a fan of that turnover machine.

You pretty much get blacklisted in this league if you try to offer sheet a player, and that is well within the rules

I don't think anyone would make a fair deal with McPhee ever again if he did that, he'd be out of the job in a year or two. Plus, I'd imagine these deals were a little more than a handshake, I'm sure other GMs had some sort of protection/assurance that these deals would be upheld (Lindros anyone).

2 1sts for hamonic and a 2nd sounds pretty close to me. If you're gaining a solid top 4 defender who will be part of the core for the next decade, does it really matter if you don't pick until the 4th round?
