i think he would fit in very well on the leafs.

And unless im mistaken, his contract comes off the books when most big raises are due.

He would fit in well.

That said, that type of dman doesn't often command a big salary, and are easier to attain that the big offense guys, so I'm not too concerned about it.

Leafs are on his No Trade list, and his agent said today that he would rather stay in Vegas than change his list to accomodate whatever Vegas wants to do with him.

Looks like a three team trade to get him back to Ottawa is needed

Nope. His name is Marc Methot, not Daniel Alfredsson. Sure, it sucks to see him go, but Karlsson will carry this team. He did it with Kuba, he did it with an ancient Gonchar, he did it with Methot. He will do it with the next guy. Elite players make those around them better.

So if they would have traded him last week then they would have lost Claesson or Wideman to Vegas. So great, they have an extra 2nd round pick but they would be down 2 d men.

Methot is a nice player but it's not the end of the world that he is gone.

This is what makes me angry - how is our top pairing guy not a big loss!?
End of the world? No it's not the end of the world...but its a big loss. And no one replaces him

I just don't think it's that hard to replace him. Oldish defenseman, people keep saying #2 but he's realistically a 3/4 guy. Does it sting to lose him for nothing? Yeah. But he's not really a 'top-pairing guy', any more than Ryan Dzingel is a top-line winger.

He plays with Karlsson 5-on-5, and is pretty steady in that role. If it turns out we can't get someone through FA or internally to replace those minutes, we can always make a trade at this year's TDL or next off-season. The price may be high, but it was a price we were inevitably going to have to pay anyways... I can't see Methot being a top-4 D after his current contract expires.

It's not that big of a loss because Methot isn't really a top pairing guy anywhere else in the NHL... he's a guy who played with the best defenceman in the world on the top pairing in Ottawa (who also played over 7min/gp more than him). By all accounts, Methot was a valuable teammate, but the benchmark for being irreplaceable is set awfully low if it applies to a 32yo player coming off of a season where they had 0 goals, ~160 hits, and just under 20min/gp of ice time.

He's not a "top pairing" guy......he was just the most recent in a line of average dmen who looked way better then they actually are by playing with karlsson

The notion that the Leafs are interested in Methot is laughable.
Methot is a LD. They have Reilly and Gardiner.
In addition, Methot plays hard and lives hard. Vegas might be a perfect for him.
I can understand Sens fans concerns in losing him, but he's not Moses..relax.
Besides, the Sens are a bubble playoff team this coming year with or without him.
Remember Sens fans you have had these expectations every 2nd year for the last 4 years, only to miss the playoffs and fire the coach.
So many other teams are in this boat too. Leafs included. Fine line between making or missing the playoffs.

This reminds me of the turds fans emphatically stating that by trading away Spezza for scrubs they'd immediately be a better team because they would be better defensively, which was better for Paul Maclean's system, and guys like Chaisson and the other scrubs promoted from within would easily replace his offense.

And then they missed the playoffs. Would have been two years in a row if not for a miracle run by a backup goalie.

What's really funny is that the Senators actually did make the playoffs the year after Spezza was traded, and in that same year Turris outscored Spezza straight-up (which he also did last season). Two years after that, they went on the 2nd longest playoff run in team history on the strength of forward depth and team defence. Meanwhile, Spezza has only been to the playoffs in 1 of his 3 years in Dallas, on a team that was supposedly in more of a win-now mode.

Maybe try "looking things up" next time.
