As for mrazek, there's a reason he's being exposed. I'm glad he isn't a flame. For Howard to be protected over him is a huge red flag. Hard pass. - dr_soiledpants
This is what we call incorrect. DET has an incompetent GM and front office. |

They're loyal to a fault when it comes to players signed long term. |

Either way, taking a chance on Mrazek would not be worth giving up our top D prospect. |

Also great point about the jersey ads Todd. Pretty much all the jerseys look ready for upper chest ads. - Feds91Stammer
You would "settle" for our best Def prospect? How kind of you. |

Getting Mrazek isn't really taking a chance and in the original idea you would also be ridding yourself of a bad contract. |

How do you figure its not taking a chance? Mrazek was terrible last year. Regardless of how you feel about your head office, they chose a much older Howard to protect. It doesnt seem there is a lot of faith in the younger Mrazek. So again, why would CGY give up our top D prospect for that?
And dumping Brouwer isnt worth that payment |

Osgood eh?
They are mad he almost took them to arbitration last summer.
According to all the goalie analysts Mrazek is an above average NHL goalie and he is only 25. |

I struggle with calling Kenny Holland incompetent. He's implemented scouting systems and generally managed the cap quite well over the years. To keep a team relevant in the post season picture for 25 years takes a community, but you need to have leadership and vision at the helm of that.
That said, yes, he has shown loyalty to players, but is that the worst message in the world to send?
When he signed Zetts, he was coming off a PPG season, and has not really declined in scoring production ever since. Is it terrible that he has 4 more seasons at a high cap hit? Oh yeah, but Holland was working around the cap in 2009 and I am wagering that years 8-12 were meant to bring down the overall cap hit
Howard? The guy was coming off a .923, 2.13 GAA season, and had performed similarly the year before. That's very solid goaltending and worth every penny of the deal he signed (had his production not immediately fallen off).
He let Mike Babcock go knowing he was one of the best coaches in the NHL, simply because the room needed a change. That takes some balls.
The worst deal in his tenure is likely the Franzen contract, I think the guy was overrated throughout his career, but he produced. He was the Ryan Smyth/Tomas Holmstrom of the late 2000's. Stood in front of the net, took abuse, scored and didn't get paid much for a chunk of his career to do so...
That said, Franzen, Datsyuk and Zetts were all cap circumvention contracts, and given their production at the time, I think he well understood that he was going to be paying them well past their prime in order to continue to compete at a high level. Every franchise needs to go through a downturn at some point, Detroit lasted twice as long as most, so I would be thankful for that. Regardless if that was 10% Holland's management, 50% or 90%, he contributed to that for a loooooooong time. |

Hossa isn't going to be playing this year, that'll save Chicago quite a bit of cap space. Is there still a chance we could get Hjalmarsson? Or is that enough to get the Blackhawks out of trouble.
I think he'd be the perfect partner for Brodie. |

I'd pass on Oshie, don't think his next contract will be worth what he brings.
Neal on the other hand...I think he'd look pretty damn good playing with Johnny and Money. |

Smith's age actually suits the Flames better...they aren't tied to him long term with young goalies on the way (and who knows what else the future brings)
8M over 2 years is not that much for a starting goalie
Smith played pretty damn good for an organization that was trying to tank last season. There really isn't a ton to lose.
All the guys everyone loves are backups from really good teams, what would MAF or Grubauer's numbers looked like playing for the Yotes last season
Add Stone and Neal and Calgary is a strong contender for the division IMO
Smith also owns the Oilers |

I'm not saying I wouldn't have preferred MRazek but not at the cost of losing Rasmus. |

Mckenzie is saying that we probably won't hear about the trades that Vegas made until tomorrow, which kinda sucks
I'd be in favour of grabbing Neal. Do you think we try and grab a dman from Vegas while we're at it? Methot and Dumba are two that come to mind, but there are quite a few other guys we could target. |

Dumba will be staying on Minny. I say we push hard to land Neal. |

I don't think anything happens. Flames are not quite in win now mode and to sell of the farm would drastically close the window.
With teams loosing players there will be more need for UFA's and I feel other teams in win now mode can offer more than us to get a guy like Neal. I can't Tre giving up a bunch of draft pics or prospects just yet to fill holes at high prices.

Neal is a left shooting LW. Oshie shot at 23% last year. Prior to that his career average is around 12%. I'd let someone else over pay and watch him come back down to earth. |
