didn't datsyuk's cap hit get traded last year to az for a 1st (i think there was more to the deal but those were the main pieces). Not saying it'll happen but the possibility is there i guess?

different situation...Datsyuk was retiring and the full cap hit was going to be put on the wings if they didnt trade him.

Theoretically the same thing could happen for Hossa, but he can't retire without cap recapture penalties (hence why he stays on LTIR)

To all the Chicago fans, sorry to hearing about Hossa. I can remember enough Sabres players who were out because of these types of non-contact/hockey injuries and it sucks from a fan standpoint.

To all you other zipperheads that think this was from the imagination of Stan Bowman to circumvent the cap, you are plain and simply stupid. The health of a player is not a joke, or something to manipulate.

The other idiots who think that Chicago is putting him on LTIR instead of having him retire and are even more stupid than the other zipperheads. The teams cannot force a player to retire, and they can't put someone on LTIR who is not medically incapable of playing.

And I thought some of the posters on the Sabres' bloggers sites were stupid...

- ChicmjBuffalo

Hold on, appreciate the insight, but I believe the gist of this is he is medically incapable of playing. No announcement of retirement yet (or LTIR) just that he cannot play in 17-18.

My gut sense is the Hawks (and Hoss) always figured/hoped an injury would give them the out to go this route sometime in the last 4 years of his deal. I think the allergy is legit, and I suspect his back or neck at minimum could also provide justification. He has played through a lot the last few years. Back injuries typically don't go away either..

Careful - my Aunt literally was just in the hospital for a few days (a la Coach Q) with a bleeding ulcer that caused her to vomit a massive amount of blood. Thankfully, got there to her in time to call 911.

Radulov is even better but he wants long term.

right but what i am saying is couldn't they LTIR him and then at some point essentially trade his cap hit to a floor team who needs to get to the 55M for some combo of picks/prospects, like so

Detroit Red Wings acquire
Joe Vitale
2016 1st round pick (#20-Dennis Cholowski)
2016 2nd round pick
Arizona Coyotes acquire
Pavel Datsyuk
2016 1st round pick (#16-Jakob Chychrun)

And just like clockwork, someone suggests the Hawks replace Hossa with Russian Cossacks.

Dadunov, Radulov, LazyFugMeOv, Mercnariov, Floaterov, etc, etc....I want a breath test done before 81's spot is done. Any hint of Vodka, pass.

Yes...that is completely correct. They aren't the only team to think of it either. At least Pronger had an actual injury though

Better of just being happy they had Hossa at the AAV they did through the "dynasty" years than get upset about him not playing anymore

- YuenglingJagr

The irony of this post is so amusing. Pronger had a concussion gets placed on LTIR and then gets traded in an attempt to CIRCUMVENT the cap and no penalty. On top of that the whole time he is "concussed" and still on the Flyers payroll/roster he gets to work for the NHL in player safety (I think), get inducted into the Hall of Fame (without retiring) and then after being traded for cap space, he gets to play in a high profile charity celeb game...with a concussion.

So the irony of your post is that you feel the Hawks have done something illegal and Hossa would just lie about his condition, yet Pronger...well he is so concussed he can play hockey with the NHL's blessing...while still being on the LTIR.

Bless your heart!

Yep - Zawaski was reporting on a TRADE of a core player. Regardless of the fact that his "source" was being circumspect, he was speaking about a trade of a core player.
- CaptainBlackhawk

Right, and if they trade Hossa's salary to floor team LTIR a la Pronger, then a core player has been traded.

Just getting facts straight. I've seen news reports mention $3.6m recapture penalty. I believe IF the recapture comes into play, it is $4.3m/year.

Sad to see Hossa go out like this but probably for his personal benefit. My understanding is that his contract only pays $1M per year for the final years of his contract. Not worth taking a bunch of medication and risking health for.

Great, great player. HOF for sure. Not many players like him who can play a disciplined 2 way game and still score like he always has. The cap space definitely does not make up for what they are losing.

I wonder if they will trade his contract to a team trying to reach the cap floor since his actual salary is so small.

- MacPatty

Exactly

...and wondering the same, given the timing of the announcement

I hope your better soon. You also have to watch out for other side effects with constant use of Ibuprofen, as an example it causes water retention which can gather in the sac around the heart causing real bad things to happen.

Except he hasn't been traded and there's zero news of him actually being traded. The news today is of a health issue with Hossa, not that he's been traded - and he was reporting a trade of a core player.

Is there a clause that wouldn't allow the Hawks to ask Hossa to waive his NMC so they could have protected someone in his place?

(I didn't read the 160 previous posts.. so forgive me if this was already asked)

Be interesting how the league handles this. Blackhawks fans all assuming they'll be allowed to just LTIR Hossa and avoid the cap hit. But league could easily force them to face the cap recapture penalty and only LTIR his salary too.

Don't forget, Kovulchuk's contract with NJ was completely legal under the last CBA, and they still were heavily penalized for trying to sign it. The league can enforce the spirit of the CBA, not the letter of it. Unlikely in this case, but with Hossa dealing with this injury for years and only retiring when he was paid less, you never know.

- Antilles

I knew you would chime in. When this doesn't happen will you promise to stop being a fan? After all of your "Kane to be prosecuted" predictions you may want to stop while you're way, way behind.

Two sides to that argument. I get your reaction from your viewpoint (not a fan of the team with the player). But from a Hawks standpoint, I hope you can also see this side. The type of contract Hossa signed was common when it was signed. It was legal under the rules at the time. The league reviewed it and approved it. Then in the next CBA, they instituted this recapture penalty which applied RETROACTIVELY to a handful of players, including Rponger, Hossa, several others. From the Hawks viewpoint, that's equally BS to penalize retroactively. I think both our views are fair here.
- Cmonalready

This. 100%.

At the time these contracts were signed, they were legal, and not only that the majority of the league was trying to sign guys using these types of contracts. The teams that didn't sign these guys then complained to the league (would they have complained if they had been able to sign these players? Probably not) like a bunch of crybabies and the league appeases them by instituting the BS recapture rule.

It's complete BS to penalize something retroactively. Teams would have operated differently, structure the contracts differently etc had they known there was a penalty. So I don't care one bit if teams are trying to get around that recapture penalty (like what has happened with Pronger). They have every right to.

Also, it's not like the Hawks are losing some David Clarkson type caliber player for the cap space. They are losing one of their top 3 forwards from last year, a player who still plays at a high level. This team is worse off than they were last year with this news, cap space be damned.

Maybe that changes quickly with the Hossa update.... I know they were hot for Hartman and Forsling?

Hartman + Forsling and 26th pick enough to get Duchene?
