Whats bullpoop is passing a rule after the fact punishing teams for contracts that were within the rules and approved by the league after the fact. If your team isn't smart enough to read the rules and apply them appropriately perhaps you should go cry to them.

I just find it convenient that he's on ltir when the hawks have cap problems and that he's entering the first year of his dead weight contract . Not the same situation as Horton or Clarkson.
- Alexzanki

When have the Hawks NOT had Cap problems. NO MATTER when this would have come up someone like you could be there to question it.

Oilers and Bettman rigged the draft lottery to get McDavid in Edmonton. So, with all due respect, frank off.

Technically yes, But my guess is the only way the NHL would allow it is if he played in 18/19. Even then they might not agree.
- kmw4631

they don't have a right to choose. If he is healthy for the playoffs he plays - simple as that. And 18/19 is after the playoffs, so how is that relevant?

I know it seems convenient. But I think with the Expansion and Draft coming up the management was likely telling Hossa 'Hey, we need to know by X date because there's a lot of maneuvering that hinges on you being here or not here'.

As a fan, it's not what I want, nor what most fans want. He's still one of our best players, and just an absolute force. Today is a sad day.

When viewed as cap space vs the player Hossa is better than his cap hit. You can view this as cap relief for the Hawks but the player(s) that fill his spot will likely not be as good. This is a net loss for the team on the ice.

Yes, they rigged it right in front of 29 other GM's in a locked room on camera. Nice tinfoil hat

Actually anything the league decides is an attempt to circumvent the spirit of the CBA they have broad powers to punish and not allow. Put simple. yes, they do have a right to choose.

Yeah you do, although Chiarelli will find a way to ruin your team. He'll hand out max deals to Draisaitl and McDavid, or dump Draisaitl because he caught him with a Bud Light in the hotel room.

Next thing you know you trade away Leon for Radim Vrbata, Anthony Duclair, and the rights to a sweet old school Doan cochina or however you spell it jersey.

If you watched Boston at all the last 15 years, take away Chiarelli's phone.

Of course it's not the same as trading a contract of a guy you signed for 7yrs amd traded the next season due to financial reasons. Then failing Clarkson's physical at the beginning of the season this past year

Talk about tap dancer around the cap

Let's assume you are correct. The answer to that is to LTIR him and do what now? You've created a gapping hole at RW, on the PK (which was horrible), a leadership role (you can never have too many of these), and lost a guy who the organization has put up as a model of what they want their players to be. All this to save $5M on the salary cap? Dumb.

Yeah, doctors (who I assume) are paid by the team, would never dare to spin the medical narrative in a way that benefits the team. I am sure there is some grain of truth to it, but the timing could not look more suspicious, especially since that was the circumvention contract that "broke the camel's back" so to say. Regardless, have been a huge Hoss fan ever since he was in OTT
- wilkobecks

I doubt a legit doctor would want to risk a scandal and medical license revocation for a sports team. I think the league can also do an independent doctor if they want. Regardless, losing Hossa is worse than gaining cap space.

Grow up, its legit, deal with it - he has to.
- riozzo

It likely is legit, in fact, it appears totally legit. But I can see where fans of other teams find it highly strange that this comes out right as all this Vegas, draft and free agency comes out. And truth be told....many on our board have (over the last few years) asked how/when we were going to LTIR Hoss and his big cap hit as it hit the later years.

However, Hoss had a real nice season last year. He will be very hard to replace. I don't see how this helps us on the ice. If Hoss had a repeat of his previous season we might all be singing a different tune. But last year he played well and the Hawks are worse off for this injury.

Like someone else said, the team probably needed a decision if it was going to affect him so much that he wouldn't play this season. I doubt it's coincidental. I fully think the team would have rather had Hossa than no Hossa.

>>>Bottom line, and almost regardless of salary cap issues, the "hockey math" remains the same: the Hawks—minus, Hossa, Marcus Kruger, and possibly Trevor van Riemsdyk— are not as good a team as the one that lost in the first round of playoffs several weeks ago.<<<

been saying similar things for months...

i have not read through the whole thread...but what is "injury" all of sudden requiring LTIR...how interesting this pops up now...

is this just manipulative BS...if so very troubling...

Doctor chosen by the league gets to examine Hossa, review his medical situation, in order to confirm.
- Antilles

Totally agree, like I said to the poster who assumed I thought it was all "fake", certain ailments are somewhat subjective and cannot be proven or refuted, and all can have some element of truth to them (I would assume that any NHL player over the age of 25 could get diagnosed with having a bad back/knee or something like that.)
Don't know why anyone is surprised, the feeling since day 1 is that he would not play out the entire contract, and that day has arrived.

Go hit the bong. You're either too high or not high enough if you dont think the NHL wanted the next Generational Canadian player in Edmonton over Buffalo. There's a reason that the NHL has pre-selected card stock for the lottery and not an actual lottery ball random selection on live TV.
