This blog says that he is going on LTIR and not retiring. Does it have to be spelled out more for you? He isn't going to play in Russia - YuenglingJagr
pretty sure they came up with this idea the day they signed this ridiculous cap circumventing contract in the first place
adding 4 years of 1 million a year to the end of the deal never should have been allowed in the first place, but kudos to the Hawks for thinking of it |

This is bullpoop! I'm so sick of teams circumventing the cap by putting players on the LTIR when they should be retiring, with their salary counting towards the cap. These teams should have to deal with the cap problems. We all knew full well that the player was never going to finish out the conctract. They should be punished for signing these stupid deals that lead to more lockouts. |

Yes...that is completely correct. They aren't the only team to think of it either. At least Pronger had an actual injury though
Better of just being happy they had Hossa at the AAV they did through the "dynasty" years than get upset about him not playing anymore |

Please read the press release that includes the doctor's statement. The doc would be putting his medical license on the line by practicing fraud. |

This blog says that, the EPSN/sportnet story hints at retirement. I find it more than coincidental that this allergy issue only comes up after all these years of playing, on the eve of an expansion draft, and as he's about to make only $1 million a season. He has the option to just retire no matter what the Hawks want, and if he does, he can make more money doing that if they shelf him with the LTIR out. If they LTIR him, can he go play in Russia for more than $1 million a year? I'm sure he'd like to, and if he does, he's no longer LTIR. |

The problem here isnt that he truly is not healthy and in need of medical attention. Its that they put him LTIR instead of retirement to get away from the recapture penalty. He has 4 more years on that contract... not likely he comes back in a year or 2 when hes 40 to make only 1 million dollars, he has a family i sure he want to enjoy. |

Allergic to synthetic materials...latex, red dye? lol Hossa not wanting to play for only $1 million a year (or for a team that gets swept in the first round), realizes he can retire and play in Russia for a lot more money and perks.
This would be a classic Hossa move (money, cups, or bust) and really puts the screws to the Hawks who already with cap issues, have to replace a 26 goal scoring wing with only an extra $1 million for each of the next three years that Hossa's retirement will save them. Any high scoring snipers out there for $1 million? Let's hope the Hawks already have a plan in place with Vegas. - NJPensfan
I think that it was always Hossa's plan to "retire" now and I have to believe that the Blackhawks were okay with that when they inked his front loaded contract back in 2009, otherwise the contract would have been spread out more evenly. The new CBA rules obviously put a wrinkle on Hossa's retirement plans with the re-capture penalty, and going on LTIR is the only way for Hossa to unofficially "retire" without crippling the Blackhawks.
It is my belief that if Hossa could not go on LTIR this year, then he would be suiting up for this coming season for sure! And don't be surprised if Boss Hoss comes back to help the team next spring!
I've met Hossa and he's a class act! |

Not a doubt in my mind, and i wouldn't be upset if he did because it would have saved us. But considering that isn't the case im gonna be bitter as we just lost Drouin due to cap issues. |

Whats bullpoop is passing a rule after the fact punishing teams for contracts that were within the rules and approved by the league after the fact. If your team isn't smart enough to read the rules and apply them appropriately perhaps you should go cry to them.

Two sides to that argument. I get your reaction from your viewpoint (not a fan of the team with the player). But from a Hawks standpoint, I hope you can also see this side. The type of contract Hossa signed was common when it was signed. It was legal under the rules at the time. The league reviewed it and approved it. Then in the next CBA, they instituted this recapture penalty which applied RETROACTIVELY to a handful of players, including Rponger, Hossa, several others. From the Hawks viewpoint, that's equally BS to penalize retroactively. I think both our views are fair here. |

Sad news on Hossa, but that type of news for each of our core players is in the near future. With the LTIR will he be our wild card coming back for the playoffs? Ha!! Great stuff as always JJ |

There must be a paper trail that documents all of this so I don't think the Hawks just came up with some creative excuse. Hossa will be missed cap space or no cap space. |

it's too bad we can't go back in time and force the Blackhawks to make the Hossa contract an 8 year 58 million dollar deal for a cap hit of 7.25 mil a year instead of the 12 year 62 million dollar deal with a 5.2 mil cap hit that the league let the Hawks get away with all these years.

I personally don't think it was because of cap issues. The issue was there, no doubt, but it could've been worked out if they wanted to keep him there |

Unless they can point out the allergic reaction specifically, I'm not buying it. Doctors have and will do more shady things if paid accordingly and many times have no better scruples than lawyers. Hossa can still play obviously and can get paid outside the NHL handsomely compared to a $1 million a year stipend from the Hawks. |
