Whats bullpoop is passing a rule after the fact punishing teams for contracts that were within the rules and approved by the league after the fact. If your team isn't smart enough to read the rules and apply them appropriately perhaps you should go cry to them.

I know it seems convenient. But I think with the Expansion and Draft coming up the management was likely telling Hossa 'Hey, we need to know by X date because there's a lot of maneuvering that hinges on you being here or not here'.

As a fan, it's not what I want, nor what most fans want. He's still one of our best players, and just an absolute force. Today is a sad day.

When viewed as cap space vs the player Hossa is better than his cap hit. You can view this as cap relief for the Hawks but the player(s) that fill his spot will likely not be as good. This is a net loss for the team on the ice.

Actually anything the league decides is an attempt to circumvent the spirit of the CBA they have broad powers to punish and not allow. Put simple. yes, they do have a right to choose.

Let's assume you are correct. The answer to that is to LTIR him and do what now? You've created a gapping hole at RW, on the PK (which was horrible), a leadership role (you can never have too many of these), and lost a guy who the organization has put up as a model of what they want their players to be. All this to save $5M on the salary cap? Dumb.

Yeah, doctors (who I assume) are paid by the team, would never dare to spin the medical narrative in a way that benefits the team. I am sure there is some grain of truth to it, but the timing could not look more suspicious, especially since that was the circumvention contract that "broke the camel's back" so to say. Regardless, have been a huge Hoss fan ever since he was in OTT

I doubt a legit doctor would want to risk a scandal and medical license revocation for a sports team. I think the league can also do an independent doctor if they want. Regardless, losing Hossa is worse than gaining cap space.

And truth be told....many on our board have (over the last few years) asked how/when we were going to LTIR Hoss and his big cap hit as it hit the later years.

However, Hoss had a real nice season last year. He will be very hard to replace. I don't see how this helps us on the ice. If Hoss had a repeat of his previous season we might all be singing a different tune. But last year he played well and the Hawks are worse off for this injury.

Like someone else said, the team probably needed a decision if it was going to affect him so much that he wouldn't play this season. I doubt it's coincidental. I fully think the team would have rather had Hossa than no Hossa.

Totally agree, like I said to the poster who assumed I thought it was all "fake", certain ailments are somewhat subjective and cannot be proven or refuted, and all can have some element of truth to them (I would assume that any NHL player over the age of 25 could get diagnosed with having a bad back/knee or something like that.)
Don't know why anyone is surprised, the feeling since day 1 is that he would not play out the entire contract, and that day has arrived.
