Last year, Gardiner was the better of the two.
Now Gardiner is also 3 years older and just had a career year that may or may not repeat itself.
I think if you were to ask around, every GM in the league would rather have Rielly because his upside is that much higher and Gardiner, while having improved alot last year, remains someone I'd be hesitant to put on the ice in important moment in fear of one of his classic "boneheaded plays".

Comparing the 2 is apples to oranges...Rielly faced all the tough comp. pretty tough to compare D that don't play the top lines to those who do.
