I see it going down a few way for VAN:

1) they select a prospect-type they feel will pass through waivers and be near the top of the call up list - ie Gaunce/Boucher/Pedan

2) They find out which available player on VAN's list other teams want and swing a deal that way. - ie selecting Sbisa/Dorsett, eating 25%-50% of his cap hit and moving him for a mid-round pick

3) they target Miller on a 1-2 year backup/mentor role (though seems unlikely now with Fleury, but offers for the Flower could change things)

Benning just better not offer up anything to sway Vegas to a certain player, there is nothing worth saving on their list

I like your mention of fools gold. Usually with most draftees I think "will he /can he do all that in the nhl" which is several steps up from the leagues they are currently in. There isnt really much of a sure thing really.

Glass many of us feel is a safer pick for C and I'd have to agree, along with nico and nolan (if truly healthy). Liljegren, makar, hague and heiskanen are all "safe looking" picks for D. When I look at Makars scouting reports, they all seem to indicate the same things, including that he has something special in his game that is unusual. They also seem to indicate he's destined for NHL as well. I think this is a player you take that leap of faith on.

Yes petersson has great skills but is very very thin, thin enough to be concerning. Perhaps a look at several family members builds would be what is needed to confirm or relieve those concerns

- SMBDragon

My fear is Makar turns out to be Stecher 2.0. Nothing will take that doubt away from me.

Pettersson is a kid . Hit the gym and proper diet and he can gain 30 pounds of muscle in three years.

Makar reminds me of Derick Pulliot . The next can't miss kid

The only calls JB should be making to Vegas is to check on if there is young talent they can acquire on the cheap, or to let them know of previous interest other teams might have had on VAN's exposed list. Like "Hey CBJ wanted Doresett for their playoff run but we couldnt figure out the cap space. Since you guys need to make the cap floor, retain a bunch of his salary for a 5th round pick.."

When people talk about Benning he is described as a nice guy , honest to a fault , open . I would like him as a friend but I don't know I would keep him as a GM.

Seeing his name at the bottom of lists as best GMs , and hearing about him making bad trades (their opinions ) does not sit well .

His personality blends in with soft Trevor and the mild manner Sedins Tanev Edler , but is this what you want from your team? The old expresion Nice Guys Finish Last is certainly coming into play here.

I want to wash my hands from the old Gillis era and move onto a new era and unfortunately to me Benning is caught in the old era poopstorm

- VANTEL

I also am tiring of Benning. I just feel that any and all GMS need to be given a 5 year window of opportunity.y
Benning sure doesn't do himself any favours when he opens his mouth. He sounds like such an idiot. Although I don't believe he is.
This draft is his most important one yet. Hope he does well this off-season.

I would try and offer him a AGM job under a new GM and have him in charge of drafting. Tell him to change up the scouts and basically be in charge of that. Have a new GM to make deals, sign contracts, etc.

Add that to the pile too

Four years is close to five . There are so many reasons to find someone new. Unless he hits a home run this year.

You are then hiring two people to do one man's job. The fact that you think he is lacking something should show you that he is not the right man for the job

I do no longer think he is the right man for the job. But the way the NHL is going, specializations are needed. Look at coaches, more and more teams are having some more coaches that specialize in certain things. Maybe doing the same thing on Management. Have the main GM and have him in charge of things like trading, contracts, dealing with media and all the small things GM's do. Then hire an extra AGM or two that specialize in one certain area. Such as drafting. have an AGM that handles the scouts etc from the head scout down.

Tanev's ring of honor ceremony will be pretty emotional though, looking forward to the pride he had being a Canuck during the tough times between the 2015-2020 seasons before he had to retire from injuries

I would like to get Gilman back as AGM . He kept telling Benning don't do that .

Definitely don't want Gillis back though

I agree...I'd like to see them do what TO has. They have 3 guys in the front office all with their own specialties. Lou is the old man who has experience as a GM and gets poops done, Hunter has a good eye for talent, Dubas is the analytical nerd.

Aquilini went from a full moneyball front office that sucked at scouting to a full dinosaur front office that would probably struggle to get a decent college degree.

Yeah, I wanted him to stick around with Benning to handle the cap, contracts and give advice against acquiring players that the eye test overrates. Clearly they didn't work well together though because it didn't last long

You really need some open-minded people working together to be successful.

Time for a new blog, 20 pages of Benning drama is overwhelming...Canucks fans have a penchant for being bloody complainers.
Don't like Kesler, Sedins, Hansen, Burrows, Bonino, Sutter, Gudbranson, Tanev, Edler, Sbisa, Hutton, Eriksson, Miller, Bieksa, Luongo, Boucher, Chaput, Megna, Skille, Larsen, Rodin, Linden, Benning, Gillis, Desjardins, Vineualt, so fans b!tch and moan constantly.

Please Carol let's start this all over again, we need another outstanding blog to have 20 pages of moaning.

Of all, he is the only one to blame. The team needed to consolidate to a single person because they couldnt reach a consensus on direction of the team. Shanahan in TO set clear objective for the team and set up his management group to meet them, its easy to collaborate when you know the end goal and the path to it. In VAN the plan was to "make money"

For a guy who's made millions, he's not very bright when it comes to owning a hockey team. I'll appreciate him for always being willing to spend to the cap and apparently spending a lot of money on other resources to help the team, but the guy (frank)ed up if it truly was his call to "re-tool while staying competitive" when this team clearly was going downhill fast. Plus Linden was a horrible hire, and then to allow Linden to hire a first time NHL GM and then a first time NHL coach was just hilarious.

And they are still doing it by hiring a first time coach in Green that everyone seems to love

It's amazing how this organization can't let go of the past. This team has a fascination with scraps and character
