Straw man arguement?

You deny that the flames got peewee level tending against the oil this season? Even league average would have swung two games in their favor. Moving that point differential to 1. Visual benchmark? Talk about straw man arguement.

- Iggysbff

Okay, then? What's your point? I can make the same argument but against the teams that got elite level goaltending against us last year will balance out that difference. Do you nitpick every minor detail about other team's records or is it just the Oilers?

Like how if the Islanders hadn't gotten peewee level goaltending against the Canes they would've been a playoff team. Does that mean we should consider them such? No, because they didn't get the other points that mattered.

On a cup winning team he's a top pair.
- Larsson_fan

Doumoulin and Hainsey played on the top pairing actually. Add a healthy Letang and Maata to that combo and that makes Schultz a 3rd pairing defenseman, like I said.

Point is that many teams in the middle of the standings and a few bounces or a bit of luck can have a big effect on the standings. Just because we were second and a few points up doesn't mean we were that much better. The team needs more peices still to be a real contender imo. Can we get there? Possibly. I personally don't have any confidence in Chias moves though.

Yeah because that's all that was different...

Had nothing to do with a healthy Klefbom, Hart candidate McJesus or an all star season from Talbot. And even with all that people forget how close we were still to the Flames.

Chia as gm of the year or Todd as coach of the year are a joke.

- Iggysbff

You must love chugging Mac-T's jizz.... you're such a cynical bumhole.

Larsson added to Klefbom give us a true top pairing... which pushes Sekera into the 2nd pairing and Nurse into the 3rd pairing. Chia adding Russell and Benning rounds out the best blue line in Edmonton since 2006.

I guess if Mac-T had his way we would be seeing M.A. Bergeron and Denis Grebeshkov back.

That's true, but that point stands true of all middle of the pack teams. The Oilers aren't a special exception and we shouldn't treat them as such. Any team will be hard pressed to make the playoffs if they get enough bad bounces. In my opinion, how the roster handles the injuries we were lucky to avoid last year is a much greater concern to me than the possibility of a greater percentage of bounces not going our way because that always evens out in the long run.

My point is you don't have to be at the top of the league to be a "true contender". Nashville just made the Finals as an 8th seed. Plenty of teams find their way through to the Finals without being Washington levels of dominant in the standings. As much as the goal is to win a Cup, there's too much luck involved to EVER guarantee such.

If Iggy can say something arbitrary like "if Calgary got average goaltending' it swings a few games their way. We could say something arbitrary like 'if we got more secondary scoring from Nuge and Ebs" we would have been in the conference finals.

Yeah. Discussing this sort of thing often devolves into a constant cycle of possibilities. I recognize that the Oilers had a higher than average PDO so we're likely due for some regression in some areas (some goaltending, maybe some scoring). But it wasn't high enough for me to figure it'll be too great of a drop-off and it's likely enough that it can be mitigated by the continued development of our roster's youth.

If not, well, we'll have had a very unlucky year and will just have to wait for the inevitable bounce back the following year. Lady luck is a fickle female genitalia.

Larsson allowed Klefbom to play a more offensive game. Or I guess some people think that Justin Schultz was working out as his partner?

Klefbom was scoring at pretty much the exact same rate last season before he got injured on a poopty team without Larsson.

So there goes that argument.
