Ew. We gave them a respectable goalie prospect AND Cousins for a 5th+NCAA 4th liner. That's really really bleh. Not a big deal but why?

The team negative (or positive) side of the trade is that we got a 5th and a "prospect" for someone we weren't signing and were going to lose on waivers anyway

It feels like one of those trades from the old days, where you send a guy elsewhere so he has a chance to actually play, solidify an NHL career if he can

I don't think this necessarily had anything to do with the expansion draft. Cousins -- a player who I do think is an NHL player from 9-12 in the forward ranks for a mediocre to bad team -- was likely simply gonna be passed on the depth chart, wasn't eligible for waivers and likely wasn't going to Las Vegas as their expansion pick

So this is Hextall simply giving a youngish player the opportunity to get into an organization where there is more opportunity than he would get with them.

Again, I actually thought Cousins did some good things last season. But with the addition of Filippula and with Weise and Weal doing decent at the end of last season, Lindberg coming over, TK likely being a year better, Vecchione signed...Cousins was getting scratched at the end of the last year, as it was, partly due to injury but also partly because he just wasn't one of their most effective players

It's obvious the FLyers didn't think they were going to sign Madsen and Cousins wasn't in the future plans so get what you can. Essentially a late 4th/Early 5th and a long shot to make it.

Madsen isn't the second coming, and he might just be a good college goalie. With how goalies work, that is the likeliest scenario. Size is his standout trait. The Warren kid looks like a total nothing and not even good at that level, so we'll see. He was the 11th forward on a terrible team who regressed. Probably little potential there. I think Cousins is a low end NHLer and has proved that. He's the one sure thing. So we essentially got a 5th to clear up the logjam. I thought Cousins was worth a 4th/5th alone, but per usual, we are not privy to actual back room dealings and maybe Hextall's hands were tied and wanted to just get SOME value. I would've hoped adding Madsen bumped it up to a 4th or something, but really that is small potatoes and quibbling. Value slightly in their favor but likely none of these four actually matter.

Nick Cousins is not great. He's a marginal NHL player. So I'm with you.

Truthfully, I had forgotten he was even still in the system -- you can never have too many goalies, really, but Hart, Lyon, Sandstrom and Stolarz are enough for right this minute

Was really hoping Datsyuk was coming back for Cousins. Hextall really blew this trade.

I doubt anyone here could tell you one thing about half our good prospects, not that I'd lump the goalie in with them. When is the last time anyone has mentioned Bunnaman? Lacyznski? Or plenty others who are far better prospects than Madsen. People tend to just know our top picks.

yeah it would've been nice. Cousins is rumored to be getting protected. So getting a protected forward for a 5th? That kinda shows how lame the value is. I liked cousins and obviously prefer him over some others that the Flyers elected to play in the bottom 6

I'm fine with it -- Cousins did what he could to get to the NHL, but as the Flyers (hopefully) improve, his run here was pretty much over

He was a 3rd rounder who made it to the NHL; not always guaranteed. Hope he finds a way to make it, but that first step of his is always gonna be a problem

LOL

Same with me and the wife. I'll start laughing or cussing, then start typing, and she'll roll her eyes and say "hockey?"

And I'll go, "Yep."

I was kinda surprised there wasn't another move or two today

Not because I think there will be a massive amount of movement before the deadline tomorrow -- I think some of the protection concerns are overblown for all but a handful of teams -- but because the teams that honestly do need a defenseman really should be working the phones right now with Minnesota, Anaheim and the Isles

It's not gonna get any cheaper. Brodin's a good freaking player, Dumba isn't bad and still has good upside. If you're a bad team or have a gaping hole in your defense, pay the freaking price and move on

That's the problem with some of these GMs -- they haggle and haggle and haggle, fiddle while Rome burns

No people tend to know what is in front of them at the moment. Just like every entry draft everyone goes analysis crazy over the picks in every round and instantly forgets about previous ones. Then out of the blue some hack writer publishes an article about a 2 year old prospect, calls them a bust because they haven't made the team yet. Which brings attention to the casual fans and they have their opinion formed by someone else.

What about Marody...who happens to be a teammate of Warren.

I forget who wrote the comment recently, but someone said (paraphrasing) "Merrick Madsen will be the Flyers goalie of the future".

I laughed.

Have no problem at all with Cousins deal. He's a 4th line player on a bad team and a spare on an average team. A 5th rounder isn't much, but you never know. Getting any kind of asset back for a borderline NHL player and a non blue chip prospect who was probably not going sign a contract is a good move in my book.

Sometimes stuff like that just happens. Remember when we got Alt for basically nothing because we took Boosh off the Canes hands?
