Playoff games do not count. AHL games do not count. Suspension/injury does not count. Drouin played 21 games in 15-16. He might've been on the roster in the press box at the beginning of the season, so those games would count toward the 40/41, but it wasn't 20 games.

Again, I'm not saying he he shouldn't need to be protected. I'm asking why he is. And no one can give me an official answer.

- Wetbandit1

You're looking at it the wrong way
This 41 games towards free agency thing doesn't matter
For example...
we have to protect Carrier, right?

He only played 41 NHL games just this year
So by your logic,
we shouldn't have to protect him
But we do

You're trying to define it by the UFA standards,
which obviously aren't the same

I can't give u a link to where it says that
All I can offer is the examples that show how this 41games doesn't seem to be a factor in determining what constitutes a pro season for expansion purposes

I know this. What I want to know is what exactly are the criteria? Not that it really matters, but it's weird they've kept it so quiet when you can go and read the entire CBA.

I don't know. He's under contract as of right now. And that matters for certain things for expansion, but not others.
- Wetbandit1

Von Dudensteins,
I got it. I found the missing piece! The magic number of games to be considered a professional year of hockey for a player that is 20 years old (as of 12/31 of the calendar year which the season starts,) playing under a standard player contract is...surveyyyyyyy says....wait for it....almost there....

We're not the only ones wondering. How bout Ryan Hartman? Additional rules of Expansion Draft regarding players required to be protected are listed in following link:

Botteril and Housley have connections wih him & Nashville will probably have to choose between him and Jarnkrok, considering they have to protect their top 4 defenders. So i'm guessing it wouldn't be too high.

So then we have to protect Antipin too? He's 24 and has played in the KHL for a long time.

This is why I would love to see the rules so we don't have to draw inferences from 14 different places. AHL counts after 20, playoffs don't count for anything, players play in the playoffs for free, 9 games for this 40 games for that. A nice easy legalese document. Is that too much to ask for?

- Wetbandit1

The KHL doesn't count
I realize that doesn't make much sense,
but I'm assuming it's bc there's no agreement between the KHL & NHL
There is between the NHL & other professional leagues like in Finland & Sweden

Panarin for Chicago is exempt for this reason
Even though he played in the KHL for like 5 seasons...
he only played in "professional" leagues affiliated with the NHL for 2yrs

The expansion criteria seems to be clear except to you dude

If you have played more than 2 "pro" years,
then you're eligible
(Had nothing to do with UFA accrued seasons, totally different thing)

Why do u need to see some official document?
It's been in multiple media reports for a year now

I brought Neal up a few weeks back
Pretty sure Nashville will choose to protect Jarnkrok,
Bc he's younger & a Neal only has 1 more year left on his deal

Also, he's a center
Fisher might retire, & Jarnkrok is gonna be #2C next year anyways

Another guy worth considering...
Aberg is a good young winger who will also be exposed
I'd call about him too

So the key is while they're under contract to an NHL team, so Euro leagues still don't count unless they have an NHL contract. So Possler wouldn't count even though he's been playing in Sweden's pro league for 4 years, he didn't play them under an NHL contract like Ullmark did. I actually didn't realize that Ullmark had a year burned by playing in Sweden until he signed the extension.

Because if you read the link Hatboro posted are things no one has said yet. That's why. Because it still didn't make sense. There wasn't a "one size fits all" for all players. Now there is.

That also makes sense with the Reinhart too
Sense his contract didn't officially start the year he was sent back to Juniors

But Drouin's started his first year & comtinued from there

This Expansion Draft is light action for the Blue and Goldski. 31 is an awkward number of teams. Wait til the next one. Peeps on here will be S'ing their pants.

yes he did. So did Botts. Overall, I think that Pegula finally has gotten it right with the Sabres. Unfortunately it has taken 6 years.
