You don't say?

I've still yet to see the actual official rules that get into the nitty gritty like the CBA. As far as UFA is concerned he only has 2 pro seasons. And if that's not the case then Sam has to be protected too. So why does one have to be protected, but not the other?

- Wetbandit1

I think it's because his ELC is up. Same reason Ullmark has to be

Yeah, but he only has 2 seasons of more than 41 games. If it was just draft year than Sam would have to be protected too.

He only has 2 years toward UFA.

- Wetbandit1

no because sam just finished his second year of pro hockey, drouin just finished his third.

I dont think years to ufa is the issue here, same reason why carrier has to protected.

is it just the ELC? i know there's some lesser known rule there that pro years count towards protection list from certain leagues but not others (like how antipin is exempt but some shl players weren't)

I don't and never did hate Carrier... I actually loved the speed he brought when he first had an opportunity, but after a few games I could see that he really didn't have "it" as far as a goal scorer. All go - no show... but a guy that can chuck the knuckles and has a lot of speed may have a chance on the someone's 4th line
- 22sabresQ

Yeah...
unless he can develop a better scoring touch,
Tough to see him as more than a depth player

Ive got a bunch of "wingers" ahead of Carrier,
all bc they have more scoring potential...

Kane, Okposo, Nylander, Ennis, Foligno, Baptiste, Bailey, Girgensons, Rodrigues
Even if we trade some of those guys...
I just don't see Carrier getting into my top9 for an extended period

That and years of pro hockey I think.

Drouin went to the AHL in his 2nd pro season.

Are UFA rules & expansion the same though?

Regardless...
What makes u say Drouin only has "2 pro seasons" though?
Wasn't he injured/suspended for part of his 2nd year?
I don't think u get a free year bc of that

Pretty sure once he "played pro" his first season,
every season after that counts...
regardless of how many games he plays

Lehner and Ullmark are dime a dozen goaltenders... Lehner is probably a douche in the locker room just like Kane and Gorges

I don't know and that's my point. I've yet to see the official rules that haven't already been filtered through someone else.

He only has 2 pro seasons because you don't have a season until you play 41 games. You can still be a "rookie" the year after you play 40 games.

Kotalik played 13 games in his first season with the Sabres, and the next season he was still a rookie. The main milestones are 10 games, burns a year on ELC, and 41, accrued year.

It's a "free" year because he didn't play enough. It doesn't matter why you don't play. Grigorenko had to be sent down at game 40 even though he only played in 25 games, because if you're on a roster for 41 games that gives you a year.

Reinhart first stint up doesn't count, it was under 10 games.

But Drouin has under 40. So it also doesn't count. Sort of.

the 40 rule is just FA correct? that has nothing to do with expansion.

I think he's talking about the rule that a player had to play 41 games this year to be eligible to be exposed

I think people may be reading too much into the requirement. From the NHL:

* All first- and second-year professionals, as well as all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward their club's applicable protection limits).

I think it simply works this way:

Reinhart's "first" season (14-15) was not a professional season because he only played the 9 games and then returned to juniors. His first pro season was 15-16. His second pro season was 16-17. His third pro season will be 17-18. Does not need to be protected.

Drouin's "first" season (14-15) was a professional season because he played 70 games in the NHL. 15-16 was his second pro season, even though he only played 38 games in the NHL (21 regular season + 17 playoffs) and 17 in the AHL.** 16-17 was his third pro season. He must be protected.

**I suspect Drouin doesn't get credit (or the opposite of credit, I guess) for being suspended for failing to report to Syracuse for almost two months in 15-16. Also, I just think it would be nonsensical to say a player who played 70 games in 14-15 and 73 games in 16-17 is only a second year pro because he played only 55 games in 15-16.

Also, even under the pro service theory, Drouin played 55 pro games in 15-16, so it should count anyway since he played more than 41 games. Unless playoff games don't count for some reason.

Well, if Reinhart played 10 games in 14-15, that would have necessarily been a professional season for him even if he never played another game that year. They couldn't send him back to the juniors or to the AHL, which would count as a professional year anyway. He would've been on an NHL roster for the entire season thanks to the transfer agreement. But by playing in only 9 games, it wasn't a pro season and he was eligible to return to juniors.

Playoff games do not count. AHL games do not count. Suspension/injury does not count. Drouin played 21 games in 15-16. He might've been on the roster in the press box at the beginning of the season, so those games would count toward the 40/41, but it wasn't 20 games.

Again, I'm not saying he he shouldn't need to be protected. I'm asking why he is. And no one can give me an official answer.

That's not right. You're allowed to go back to Junior after 9 games. Grigorenko played 25 and he still went back to the Q. You're just not allowed to come back to the NHL unless under an emergency.

The only thing that happens after 9 games is you burn a year on the ELC. And after 40 you get a year toward UFA.

I'm watching/listening to all these Housley/Botterill interviews about Housley's familiarity with Jake McCabe. It would be kind of funny if the Sabres ended up moving him this summer.
