Not true, really. If you look strictly at points and no other intangibles, we paid Greene 384k per point, where Phaneuf was at 233K. There are a lot of players ahead of Phaneuf on a cost per point basis as well, he just has a large sum of money owing so it seems like he's the most over paid.

I know there are other intangibles when it comes to players but let's not start throwing out perceptions versus realities. We give up a forward who seems like he has nothing left and only eat up 2 million of cap space next year, and 1.5 the year after compared to Cammy's contract. With the amount of cap space we have, maybe after a year or two we eat some of the contract and flip him. In the meantime we get a serviceable 4th dman without really giving up anything. Still have all of our main assets to go after another top 4 dman who can move the puck.

That's fine now but 4 years at $7M is a lot to spend. At least with Cammi you're free in a couple seasons. If you can get a sweetener out of the Sens it could make it worthwhile but straight up I'd rather take the cash to the open market. Conversely 4 years as $7M is at least a start to landing Shattenkirk. He'll probably want more years but the dollars are probably close.

I agree there would have to be a sweetener from Ottawa, my thinking is you get someone who can help now on defence and is better than 90% of our current D. If Ottawa were to retain some salary (20%), it makes it more manageable and if we tried to flip him in a year or two, we could retain a percentage (20%) as well and the cost to the acquiring team would be roughly 4.5 Million.
I have a bad feeling for whichever team signs Shattenkirk, I think he is highly overrated and hitting the market when nothing better is available.
