Oh he was 3rd on TOI for the stanley cup champs....well there was no Letang and half a Schultz during the whole playoffs. Maatta would be bottom pairing minutes on a healthy team (and he is a bottom pairing Dman who can jump into the 2nd Pair short term due to injuries)
Dutch had a rough year but he isnt so low in value that they will be taking 3rd pairing Dmen for him.
Maata playing Top 4 minutes on the Avs....that would be a disaster, he isnt good enough to log tough minutes - DDM-Coga
Ok...so what? Youre playing with ifs (if Letang was there or Schultz all the time)and not reality. The reality is he was leaned on and important in winning the cup and that was after missing two straight months before the first playoff game. |

It's a tough call and I won't be mad if they bring him back. But they have a lot of guys like that. Rust, Hagelin, Wilson. Ended up with Hagelin and Hornqvist on the 4th line. So on ice I think they'll be fine. Ashton-Reese actually seems like a good replacement who might be ready but there is no space for him. - Tojo.
I really like Hagelin and Hornquist but if it is between them at $4M and Kunitz at $2M, I keep Kuni all day. To do so, the Pens could trade Fleury prior to expansion leaving Hagelin or Hornquist up for grabs to LV.
As for the young guys like Aston-Reese, Sprong, Sundquist and Simon, I'd rather them start in the minors and wait for the call up. I think the Pens played it perfect with Guentzel this year. There will be injuries and opportunities for the young guys to step in. |

I'm sure they could add a window later though. |

Two words: Injury Prone. You dont trade someone like Duch for a guy that will more then likely miss a solid portion of the season to injury. Especially considering AT BEST he is the 3rd best Dman on the pens, and frankly you could make a case for Dumo and Cole being better Dman. |

what I mean is your window is opening now, You have all the pieces in place, bobrovsky is hitting his prime. Dont wait a year or 2 till some other pieces mature to take that Top 6 spot.
NHL seems weird like that, need to hit that sweet spot in your cores prime to win now unless you have generational talent to will your way to cup sometimes |

You are wildly undervaluing hornquist IMO... |

So the team that won 2 cups back to back is in on Duch..?
Makes sense, |

Yeah I agree with the injury prone part. Its hard to gauge just were Maatta is at because of all the injuries the past few years. I really liked his play in the playfoffs though. It was encouraging.

Before missing all the time from injuries and cancer though Maatta > Dumo or Cole. |

Matt Murray saved that D Cores butt, lets not pretend that it was the D core lead by Maatta that Delivered that cup |

Montreal and Columbus come to mind. They really could add Duchene since they have a window is now mode.
Sneaky team would be Nashville. Imagine that team with RyJo and Duchene down the middle. THey have Samuel Girard in their system, I could see a trade package built around him and their 1st rounder. - DDM-Coga
I was going to say Columbus and Nashville. Especially Columbus, strong everywhere but center. |

Sundqvist needs to clear waivers so he'll be on the team. The rest probably not. Ashton-Reese is the one who might be ready now though. Has a well-rounded game and was instantly WBS best forward. |

That D still not getting the respect it deserves I see...5 of them have back to back rings now. They played pretty damn good D...kept alot of shots to the outside and took care of rebounds quite well...they just couldn't transition well to the forwards. Maatta was actually one of the better at the first pass to the forwards.
EDIT: oh and they ended up with same amount of points as Nashvilles D these playoffs... |

Maatta has been in the top 4 since the end of his rookie year. Letang's injury had no bearing on his status, he plays the left side and Letang plays the right. I'm not going to pretend he's a stud but he's been handling that role for 3 years now and on both Cup teams. He just doesn't add anything you'd consider special, but he can play 20-22 minutes a night. |

Will someone try to sign Bonino and Shattenkirk together to get some form of commitment and slight discount? |

Duchene to the Pens? I'm going to rule that one unfair. |
