The last decent player to come out of the AJHL and play any significant amount of time at the NHL is.....wait for it......Joe Colbourne.....or Matt Frattin, whichever one underwhelms the most. Cale Makar....no thanks, Mittlestadt no thanks. Both are high risk of bust.
Glass or Vilardi = safe, impactful, near NHL ready - Brooks_Light
Drafted 3rd round to the ST. Louis Blues out of the AJHL from the Fort Mcmurray oil barons in the 2012 NHL entry draft. COLTON PARAYKO. Then 3 years of college.
Sorry bud. |

I have been expressing my dislike for these 2 for months now. With these 2 players, expect more of the same super soft as fack hockey. No thanks. 16 years of this poop is enough for me.
Have we ever had a number 1 centre that played with an edge? Sedin, Gradin, Sundstrom.
History has shown that the good ones play with an edge Sakic Yzerman Trottier Forsberg Crosby Malkin Toews Getzlaf Bergeron Lemieux Messier and even Gretzky all played with a little edge. I dont believe Mittlestadt does at all. He will be another Marchand punching bag. - Reubenkincade
Makar is definitely not soft. very far from it. This teams needs skill more than anything else. Grit can be addressed with later picks and UFA signings. |

For me Makar playing in the league he did is what turns me away from him. Not much talent in the AJHL - phyllee
It wasn't just the AJHL, he produced against all the best teams at that level in the Royal Bank Cup as well as at the World U17 Challenge. This kid is good!

The thing about grit is you either have it or you don't, size doesn't always translate into grit.....look at Shery and Rust on Pitt. |

for sure....look at Grenier, 6'5, 215 and he is softer than the Sedin's |

I think Mittelstadt is a better skater than Glass and he's got some serious skill, just needs further development. As for Makar, I don't really know enough about him.
If they manage to get a second first round pick, I hope they take two centers with high-end skill sets - LeftCoaster
I prefer they build with C in first picks over taking the D that are available in this draft. There will be good C available in second round as well with 33 & 55. |

Yes he is and dynamic new age D too. But still the C that are there when Canucks pick seem better if you look at BPA. |

Glass is becoming my boy...he's ahead of Vilardi/Casey for me now. The more I watch, the more I'm convinced that he's the best pick out of those 3. He's not the flashiest player or most explosive, but he gets poop done and his game translates well into the pros IMHO.
Plus he's got room to improve physically just like pillsbury doughboy Mittelstadt. Glass is lanky and judging from his pics at the combine, he's not physically developed yet and some serious gm time with NHL trainers would do him good. He might still grow a bit too, comes from a tall family. |

I think Glass, Vilardi and Makar are all fine picks. Wouldn't be upset with Heiskanen, Mittle or Petersson as well. Strange draft. |

I could see him getting taller putting on the weight and making the canucks next year. Going to be a solid player, really hoping thats who we get. |

To be honest, haven't spent any time watching the kid because he isn't on the Canucks radar. Definitley an intriguing skill set though. |

for sure, one of Tanev or Edler should be traded. As much as I'd love for Tanev to be traded pre-draft, the trade can't be rushed. we need a big return. |

for the right deal, yes
I'm glad that Benning actually seems unsure about trading him, it'll keep the price high. He usually gets bent over value-wise when he's the one initiating the trade talks and trying to make things happen. |

Agreed. I wonder if Benning has even approached Edler this off-season. It would be a mistake to not at least be blunt/honest and tell him that the team is rebuilding and that he won't be around for the turn around. Maybe he'd provide a shortlist of teams that he'd go to and Benning could get a decent return.
I see Tanev as a much better partner for young dmen than Edler. He's such a calming presence and easy to play with. I can't think of a dman who hasn't looked better playing with him, than without. |
