If they sign a UFA during that 3 day window, it is considered as a player being selected from whatever team the UFA played for.

This is correct.

I bet they put a lid on it for a day or 2. By mid to late week I be things start getting crazy. There has to be deals done already. Bettman keeping them under wraps.

I'm interested to see what they do with Tanev, trading him for a good return would indicate to me they're serious about this rebuild.

For the same reason I dislike Gretzky, prima dona whiners of the biggest kind.

I have yet to ever hear Crosby whine, but sure.

100%.
I look forward to Linden & Benning giving contradictory excuses as to why they didn't move him.

I reserve the right to cheer for another team until Benning and Linden are fired if this summer doesn't go well

I'll be practicing with a new team and avatar shortly

I feel the same way. If they waste the 1st Rd pick on Mittlestadt or Makar, I may start cheering for the Flames or maybe Nordiques.

I get people souring on Mittle (although I don't agree ) due to the combine...but why Makar? High ceiling, tested well at the combine and seems like a great kid.

For me Makar playing in the league he did is what turns me away from him. Not much talent in the AJHL

A lot of kids play there that plan on going to NCAA. HIs stats show that he would have been pretty dominant in the CHL as well.

Definitley a consideration but Jost had no problems transitioning to the NCAA. Makar was the best player on the ice at the RBC cup and that counts for something. Another thing to consider is that the AJHL allows 6 overage players while the CHL only allows 3. The skill level is a bit lower in the AJHL but the players are bigger and more physical. The fact that Makar came in at 511.25 is also a plus. Prior to the combine he was listed at 5'10.

He could have went to College last year.

He put up numbers that not a lot of other players did in the league at a younger age then most and as a D. It's a bit hard to ignore and when they are few D available in this draft. I think in another draft he's probably looking somewhere around 20-30.

I think Mittelstadt is a better skater than Glass and he's got some serious skill, just needs further development. As for Makar, I don't really know enough about him.

If they manage to get a second first round pick, I hope they take two centers with high-end skill sets

Van already has Dahlen, Goldobin, Granlund, Baertschi, Virtanen, Boeser for wingers that look to be promising. MacEwen, Carcone could be added to maybe's.

Not a lot of high end talent there but talent enough to be pumped up a bit by an elite center.

The organization has no centers to speak of behind Horvat, it's just maddening to think how they could get to this spot. Nonis, Gillis and Benning are all to blame.

When you draft great centers you do well as a franchise, the proof is out there, they just need to start building properly. Goaltending defence and centers.

Agreed.
In dire need of skilled centre's. Vilardi/Glass/Patterson and I like Rasmussen not at 5 though.
Bo is a nice piece but not your guy to build around.

The last decent player to come out of the AJHL and play any significant amount of time at the NHL is.....wait for it......Joe Colbourne.....or Matt Frattin, whichever one underwhelms the most. Cale Makar....no thanks, Mittlestadt no thanks. Both are high risk of bust.

Glass or Vilardi = safe, impactful, near NHL ready

I have been expressing my dislike for these 2 for months now. With these 2 players, expect more of the same super soft as fack hockey. No thanks. 16 years of this poop is enough for me.
Have we ever had a number 1 centre that played with an edge? Sedin, Gradin, Sundstrom.

History has shown that the good ones play with an edge Sakic Yzerman Trottier Forsberg Crosby Malkin Toews Getzlaf Bergeron Lemieux Messier and even Gretzky all played with a little edge. I dont believe Mittlestadt does at all. He will be another Marchand punching bag.

The fact that Makar dominated against BCHL teams alleviates these concerns for me.
