defenceman Andrej Sekera had a fine season, his 35 points the second-best total of his career, but his knee was wrecked in the playoffs on a hit by Ducks centre Ryan Getzlaf, and he’s expected to be out for 6-9 months, so his absence should carry well into next season. The upside is that, if the Oilers add a body on the blueline to help offset the loss of Sekera, then they will (theoretically) be all the better on the defence when Sekera is finally ready to return.

While Adam Larsson reaped the rewards of Edmonton’s improvement, getting lots of credit for team improvement that probably belonged elsewhere. He was fine, and played more than 20 minutes per game for the third straight season, but there isn’t a lot of data to suggest that he’s an impact player on the blueline. Certainly not when compared with Sekera, for example.

Notice the heatmaps he uses immediately after this quote? Do you see the clear division between the left and right side of the heatmap?

Based off what I've seen of these heatmaps, it stands to reason that they paint a picture of a pairing as much or more than an individual player. Taking this into account, Larsson's side of the ice seems far better defended than Klefbom's left side. Further, if we factor in this pairing's evident and obvious early season struggles (about 30 games iirc) and the absurd improvement they experienced in the latter half of the season (going from 3+ GA/60 as of mid-December to 2.27 GA/60), I believe it's fair to suggest that these charts are going to be skewed by that as well.

As far as being an "impact player on the blueline", we can argue till we're blue in the face but we won't get anywhere without quantifying what is "impact". Is it fair to say that "impact" requires them to have a noticeable and significant impact on some manner of statistical measurement? Also, does every effective blueline NEED to be an "impact player" or can the absence of strong positives be forgiven or seen as a boon in the absence of strong negatives?

So the Oiler homer fan base nominated him for GM of the year ?
- Reveen.

What's funny is you gays want Chia to win it because you feel it somehow validates your opinion.
Me? I enjoyed the season. I do not see a Stanley Cup winning roster yet.
