I really don't see the issue here to be honest. Ovi has been the best goal scorer of his era and more than likely the best of all time.

This year was pretty clear that he was taking it easy all year to save it for the playoffs, then he was playing hurt after this knee on knee from Kadri.

The guy has the ability to put up 50+ goals every year, I say put him in the position to do that. You want the OVI who is the best player in the world, not the one who is saving it for the playoffs.

Caps still have a contending team, keep building and go for a cup again. It's that simple

Because I have been around hockey players and they always say the grinders are way better than you think. So much of what star players do is based on their ability to find open ice.

All I am saying is that when you don't have a 200 lbs defenseman trying to kill you, all NHL players are pretty skilled in the shooting and the passing. I don't think this is would be controversial, but actually pretty obvious. One of my best friends grew up playing on a team with Daniel Carcillo , and even though in the NHL he was a fighter, he was still the best hockey player any of those guys knew.

James, you repeat once again that the Caps are "the best team in the NHL" and simply unlucky in the playoffs, then go on to list several ways that you'd improve the team, from replacing Trotz to giving Ovechkin a better winger and more ice time. If they're the "best team in the NHL" and simply unlucky, why change anything? Changing something might inadvertently make them a worse team and, if they're just unlucky, then their luck should change if they just keep doing the same thing. If you really believed that they're the best team and only unlucky, you'd be advocating not changing a thing. You're trying to have it both ways, though. You want to believe that they're the best team because that would validate your hockey theories while also wanting to show how you would do things differently as GM. You're not consistent.

The fact that they haven't made a conference final the last two years, says they are not. Isn't the ultimate goal to win the Cup? Washington was 7-6 in their last 13 games played, that doesn't seem like the best team to me. 0 goal differential, again...that doesn't seem like the best to me. 2016 they were 6-6 in their last 12 games, seems when the stakes were the highest and the most important, Washington was pretty average.

I've played at a pretty high level of hockey when I was younger, not that anyone cares , but one huge difference between pros vs. others is their anticipation, and patience. The reason I mention this is b/c of Tanner's comparison of Beagle to Ovi.

Ovi vs. Beagle or any top flight scorer vs. a Beagle , or any other player like him is that the goal scorer takes that xtra split second to wait for opening to shoot, or to change their shooting angle (i.e. ..toe drag, etc). Those slight changes in shooting angles completely change the the % of that shot becoming a goal! A large % of Ovi's shots are slap shots from the top of circle ( I know...its been beat to death), and his onetimer gives him that xtra milli second adv. over the goalie.

If he became a little less predictable w/ what he does, maybe he would raise that Shooting %, or give his teamates open nets if he passed it to them more.

Whether Tanner wants to admit that is another story. Amt. of shots isn't the end all be all, but rather what you do w/ that shot.

And Fleury made that save on Ovi w/ his stick b/c Fleury put himself in a position to save the puck!!!!! It might have been a low % save, but he SAVED it! It wasn't all luck, b/c he put his stick in front of the puck and stopped it! Duh!!!!
