The only issue I have with VDV is what he brings to table.....I think they can upgrade the position. As far as the non scratching, that's the coaches prerogative. Considering they had a disappointing year I think everyone should look in the mirror and ask themselves what they can change or do better....including the coach. - landros 2
My only issue with with Chris Vandevelde is, he's not a good hockey player. |

They can only hand out 50 NHL contracts (includes slide players and AHL players). Years ago, they didn't have the same amount of higher-end prospects so they could throw them at more role player types. Now, they have to be a bit more pickier.
He projects as an NHL 3rd/4th liner with limited offensive upside. The best option would be to offer him an AHL contract with a chance to transfer it to an NHL one a la VandeVelde. - jmatchett383
I don't think they are near the 50 limit at all. not 100% sure but fairly certain.
if he has any nhl upside then you sign him. worry about the contract thing later. I am sure next year they have several dropping off petterson goulbourne, few others possibly.
I don't care either way. if they have evaluated him and don't think he has a future then that's ok. IMO organizational depth is not why he will or wont be signed is all I am saying. |

VDV is like that old rocking chair your grandma used to own. You inherited it after she passed, but it never really fit in to your room decor and you didn't want to put it away or get rid of it because it holds sentimental value.

cap friendly says 33/50 which sounds implausibly low even by off-season standards.

This is my official apology for bringing up VDV....it was a joke...yes a poor joke. In response to Bigge and his looking forward to a young skilled line of the future. again my apologies. Thank god the future of this team appears to be leading away from the Vinny, VDV and Macdonald debates.... |

Dove-McFalls is more worthy of an ELC than Pettersson or Goulbourne were, but unfortunately for him the Flyers are getting deep at forward prospects now.
Nico/Nolan and Lindblom will sign an ELC this summer, and Kase might also.
In 18-19 Rubtsov, Laberge, and Bunnaman will be 20 and ready to go pro. Allison, Marody and Laczyznski might also be ready to leave college depending on their development.
And the Flyers will have to make a decision by 6/1/18 on Twarynski and Salinitri. - Feanor
Vorobyov signed too. |

Love the competition. I expect one of the 18 to be Vegas bound. 4 to ahl/juniors (#2). Cousins Leir read Laughton are not exactly must have on roster players at this point. Read could get bought out or sent to ahl as the vet / call up guy. This is an unnecessary worry. Let the competition roll out we have plenty of cap and nobody were waiving for ahl would be heart breaking to lose.

If you assume they resign Vecchione, Weal, and Cousins, that gives them 14 NHL forwards from last season.
Assuming they keep all of their D minus MDZ/Schultz, that gives them 5 full-time D from last season.
Assuming they resign Stolarz, that gives them 4 G.
They have 19 skaters that are non-NHL regulars, and they will probably resign Laughton and Leier.
That gives them 44. Add Lindblom, #2, and a backup/starter goalie (either for the NHL or AHL) and you're at 47. You'll lose one for expansion, so that's 46. They'll have to add at least one AHL or NHL defensemen to replace either MDZ/Schultz or Morin/Hagg/Sanheim so that's 47-48. That leaves 2-3 contract slots for Dove-McFalls, and I'm trying to use the bare minimum to fill out the AHL roster. I'd give him an AHL contract and let him work towards an NHL one. |

Are you positive? If you're right, then I apologize, but I thought it did. I know it doesn't include unsigned CHL players, but I thought it counted once they signed their ELC.
But I still think an AHL contract is the way to go. |

Anyone else suspect that we haven't heard of a VdV extension yet because the organization is waiting to see what will happen with Jordan Weal?
Hopefully once that jam up gets resolved things will start to happen. I'd be fine with it.
