That's all fine and good when you have a complete team to start with, then it's ok to gamble on a defenseman late in the 1st, because (frank) it, you already have Perry, Getzlaf, Kesler, Rakell, Fowler, Vatanen and Lindholm. But if you're just trying to fill out a team that has holes everywhere the year or 2 after trading away a player if he strung together 3 good games then it becomes much harder to potentially throw picks away on a defenseman that might make your team in 4 years.

I didn't believe he would do it because he was a draft guy at heart, figured if he was going to speed things up it would be by using extra picks to move up. I didnt think he could build a contender overnight, he apparently did.

He started building the moment he pulled off the poorly timed Kane trade which involved multiple assets and draft picks being moved in an effort to land players in their prime in hope of speeding up the rebuild. (yea yea i know tank bogosian worse blah blah whatever).

So from that point thats three deadlines, two drafts and two off seasons.

I call bs on that last bit. Not directed at you but every post in here the day after the kane trade was just different variations of saying picks are bad and trading them for in prime players is better. Technically true, but when you do that and the results land you 1 ish good player..well...

See, that's the problem, you think this is his core. Sure it's most of it, but it's still probably 3 players shy of where he wanted to be.
