Oh for sure Gretzky was far better than others in his era ....but if he would have been far better from say 1997-2017 he wouldn't any of his records
- Redmile247

You can't comment on that cause we will never know. He would have developed differently then he was. He would have been faster and stronger like the way players are today.

The records would still exist ...just Gretzky wouldn't hold them

How do you know?

Gretzky is this era wouldn't have came close to any of his records ...he benefited from being the best player in the most offensive era ever
- Redmile247

He would still be the best player in his era, in this era.

Or do you think the advances in training, diet and equipment wouldn't be available for him?

As I said, there's zero way of knowing that or not. Different eras have a different meaning for a player whos greatest asset was his hockey IQ.

He would still be the league leader much like he was in the 80's. Nobody comes close to him as a talent.

Someone else would have earned damn near 3000 career points?

No, I'm absolutely sure I commented on Tryamkin, especially about his self entitlement.

Look at the way the game was played then and now ...obviously you can't say for sure and will never know ...but anyone who thinks gretzky is putting up over 90 goals or 200 points in a season in the game today is crazy

I don't deny he couldn't he the best player in any era ...just his era was the most offensive

Imo all those advances you speak of have levelled the player my field between players as oppposed to making the best players better than the rest

Even G himself has said on many occasions he would never have put up numbers in todays NHL like he did in his era. The playing field has changed. Its called evolution.

Would be nice to have 1 or 2 D that have some AHL experience. More then 2 years.
- manvanfan

I think Vantel answered for me suggesting Biega. Add in Subban you got the two experienced AHL D you need.

Bigger goalie equipment, larger and faster and more skilled dmen, different rules, the advent of the butterfly...of course he wouldn't. However, all the same game advances that were unavailable to him in his time would now be his and he would still be thinking the game 5 steps ahead of everyone else.

There's no winner to be had in trying to compare players from different eras really. I doubt Crosby would enjoy the 80s where every goon that could half assed skate was looking to break your neck every game. We'll never really know.

See I think like someone mentioned earlier he was way ahead of his time in the way he thought and saw the game ....but I look at his completion ....I think he thought the game closer to players in today's game ...while the rest were behind

He changed the way the game was played. Before he came along the game was played in front of the net, he changed it to doing it from behind. He went to where the puck would be not where it was. His hockey sense will always be the greatest.

People started playing hockey at 8 back then he started at 4. He did exactly what it took to be ahead of the curve. Some people just have that built inside them to be the best. He would have found something to separate him from the rest.

Ok. So by saying this you're saying that Dionne, Trottier, Kurri, Coffey, Boutique, Gartner, Gilmore ,Messier , Blake, Roy etc... wouldn't be Stars in today's NHL?

You're absolutely grasping for straws. It's quite pathetic to be honest.

Nope. Wayne would still have the most career points. Maybe only 2000, but still the most.

That's an interesting thought, but an intangible like IQ isn't something that can really be trained, not to an elite degree anyways. The guys that are considered the greatest in their sports all have it, and it's what elevated them beyond any physical gifts to be the greatest in their sport.
