Re: Lyon & Stolarz
Neither players body of work has shown me enough to think that either will be an NHL starting goalie. I really doubt either one is ever more than an NHL backup. The real future of the Flyers goaltending lies with Sandstrom & Hart. By the time they are competing for a Cup, one of those 2 kids will likely be the starting goalie

- BiggE

Looking at recent history goalies aren't becoming starters until age 23-24. I wouldn't assume these kids will be exceptions at this point. You're also throwing them out behind an inexperienced defense. I don't like it.

I think Stolie is definitely an NHL backup but it is most likely his ceiling. Saw some things this year in the home games he played that I thought he was working on in the AHL that didn't seem to be improved. Dude is 6'6", when he goes down to his knees he should still cover to the bar.

Fairly certain Stolarz is still waivers exempt next year (which is why I think Hextall will sign another goalie). What is the reason you have him as waiver eligible?
- YuenglingJagr

He's played three full pro seasons and is no longer on his ELC. He is subject to waivers.

He did seem ticked off at Management and maybe even some teammates during those end of year interviews.
- dragonoffrost

And after a mediocre year(even with some strong stretches) he didn't earn the right to be calling out his general manager and coach's decisions.

I was a big Steve Mason fan ever since his Junior career. I was on his wagon his entire Flyers career but it looks clear to me that he'll be moving on.

That being said, whatever responsibility Hextall owns in the separation, he needs to rectify with a solid plan to replace an under rated goaltender.

There are different waiver rules for goalies, so he does have a year left of being waiver exempt.

I think it is different for goalies, but I am not 100% positive (HIV+)

Well, it is actually 73 games of eligibility left, but the 1 year is what will matter.

He and Lyon are both exempt next season, but eligible the following season. There is a lot that needs to be decided over the next calendar year for the Flyers/Phantoms goalies

- YuenglingJagr

Lyon has two years left, or 60 NHL games.

I believe that team defense and goaltending are symbiotic. Both weren't good enough last season. I think the single biggest issue causing the team to miss the playoffs last season was poor team defense. Hakstol did not get that under control fast enough and it went on for too long. You don't have to be the most talented team in the league to play solid team defense regardless of system and style of play. I also think better team defense leads to better offense. Mistakes were often and repeated such as players routinely puck watching in the defensive end and not being aware of their checking responsibilities leading to quality chances and goals against.

I thought they burned a year in 2015-2016 with him in order to sign him.

3 years would be 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018.

So they might have something wrong there.

from cap friendly

Exemption Determination
Waivers signing age: 23
Position: goalie
Years Exempt: 3
NHL Games Played Exempt: 60

So years should be 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 like they list under games.

Hence the difference because goalie should already be applied

Not sure if this ever got shared on here: http://www.sportsnet.ca/h...prospects-2017-nhl-draft/

If this list is accurate I hope Hexy can move up into the later first round with a combination of 2nd & 3rd round picks/other assets and get one of Suzuki, Yamamoto or Thomas.

If they stay put, Michael DiPietro would be an interesting name if he's still on the board. Flyers already have some quality goaltending prospects but DiPietro has impressed me every time I got a chance to see him.

Lyon's signing age was 23, so per the chart he has three years or 60 NHL games of being exempt from waivers.

Burning the year off his ELC didn't affect his waiver status because he didn't play in a Pro game in 15-16. It just made him an RFA this summer.

For players whom are 20 or older, the year in which they play their first Professional Game (e.g. NHL, AHL, ECHL, KHL, European Leagues) is the year which is considered their first year towards the waiver exemption; however, the player must be under an NHL contract.
