Well dunno if it would be a big mistake....but I'd like to see another season of Nylander first.
Try and find Dmen by other means for now. - Fakepartofme
Agreed. Absolutely no reason to trade a guy like Nylander when we have guys like JVR, Bozak, picks and some decent prospects upgrade the D... Which shouldn't be difficult at all considering what the Leafs iced last season.
This year was a huge surprise to everyone, Lou/Shanny/Babs included. The upcoming season should be very interesting to see if last season was a true indication of where is team is headed or if the group overachieved. My gut says the former, but another year of development and assessment is needed before we pull the trigger on any massive trade for a talent like Nylander... And even then I'm not sure about trading Nylander given his ridiculous potential.
The ONLY reason or time to even consider trading an asset like Nylander is either:
A. The management group truly feels that the rebuild is done and that this could be the trade to place the team in a position to win... No there yet
or
B. There's an opportunity to absolutely fleece another team/GM... Rare, but it happens |

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that trading an immense but still developing talent like Nylander violates virtually every tenet of the philosophy upon which the Shanaplan stands.
The Leafs need D, but overpaying for someone else's defensemen isnt the way to fill that need.

The Leafs can try to fill out their d corps with mid level d-men ahead of the expansion draft and in free agency and make significant improvements over what it was last season.
That coupled with the possibility that the Leafs are going to improve on offense means the club could improve as a whole next year without selling the farm.
As much as I love keeping pucks out of our net, wins come from outscoring the opponent. |

If the Leafs develop the most lethal forward corps in the League (they might), and they have a goalie (they do, I think) who can make the stops that are absolutely vital, then they don't need a great D corp, because as you pointed out, to win you merely need to outscore your opponent. |

I think you hit the nail on the head.
For me the biggest question mark next season is Andersen. |

I'm doing my best impression.
I said many months ago that I wouldn't trade Nylander for anything at this point of the rebuild and I stick to my guns unless the return is bonkers. - TheMussel
Anything?
Karlsson?
McD?
Seth Jones?
Oh I see, you said bonkers...ok carry on. |

Well.
You still need a quality d corps to win the cup.

For the summer at least. Mrs Lums moves to a new job in Oakville at the end of June, so I'll likely follow once my contract is done. |

Sadly, I think it will be more painful for us Leaf fans.
I am starting to think that it will be the Sens vs Predators in the final..

Leafs should target Del Zotto as a UFA D this summer.
Then trade JVR (+) to Anaheim for either Manson, Vatanen Montour or Theodore. Add additional assets if needed and/or eat a poopty contract depending on the player/package.
Dumba, Ellis or Ekholm are other D I'd love to target.
Adding two of the D above to Rielly, Z, and Gardiner would be huge... And I think it's possible. |
