Cap hit differential is pretty big, even if WSH wanted Edler, I doubt they could take on an extra 2.2 mil for someone to fill the same roster spot
- NorthNuck

Canucks have one contract for retention open this season. Keeping 50% on Edler would be worth it for them and Caps would jump all over it.

NMC, Edler won't move from the country club.

not worth the #3 to take on either Niemi/Lehtonen (reminder this is a team getting the 3oa with Seguin/Benn, so clearly both goalies are terrible), and we lose Tanev? Im very not interested in this trade just to get ... Middlestat? is that who you are gunning for?
- Crazybagoham

It's an opportunity for JB to get the top D and needed top 6 C with 3OA & 5OA. He would really control the board for top 10. Possibly, could then even trade down 5 with this control. Thus pick up another pick or prospect with a team wanting a certain player.

Why my first post to NorthNuck said the Caps could be a team Edler might be convinced to waive. Their owner is all good with country club for his players and pampers the team over there. They still need to win now. Plus they might dole out a lucrative contract extension for Edler to say yes to as well. That's how Sens got Burr to waive. So don't discount it. It's something possible. So let's see if oppotitnuty is there come July and JB wants to push it.

said the guy trading away arguably our most valuable trade asset in Tanev for a #3 pick in a subpar draft....

you seem salty...

- Crazybagoham

I was, deservedly. You've inserted yourself into a conversation firmly on one side and then comment. I'd be fine with other assets, a top 5 pick would be excellent in any draft.

I don't see the Caps jumping on that even if Edler waived. I think they can fill that role for cheaper and with spending assets, there will be physical 4/5/6 Dmen available in free agency

Tanev and Sven for 3oa and one of the goalies

Flip 3ov and 33 and Hutton for 2ov

Draft nico or Nolan, draft lilgran (sp) or herschenan (sp)

They have arguably the deepest blue line in the NHL (best regular season defensive stats too), don't know why they would even be interested in a major addition to the defense, goal scoring was their problem when it mattered.

I'd rather keep 3OA take Vilardi and then keep Hutton and 33 OA

This price is too steep. I don't even think Sven should have to be in the deal. Tanev for 3oa and salary dump is close. I don't think flipping that pick for 2oa is worth it.

shouldn't be trading guys under 25, as much as I think hutton is overrated trading him after a bad year is a bad call.

agreed, with some tweaks to his game, I think Hutton could be a really good point producing defenceman, I wouldn't even consider any offers for him for another year

First of all, I can't imagine Gilardi allowing this transaction. He hates Aquilini. I would put Tanev's value between the 12th-15th pick. What would Dallas pay to take on a goalie contract? a late 2nd or 3rd pick? 13th overall plus 60th overall doesn't equate to a top 3 pick in my opinion. I think Vancouver fans are being Vancouver fans again and overrating our assets. Tanev has value but he is also injury prone and can't provide offense.
- CanuckDon

Beyond ownership differences, people see Dallas needing a goalie dump and owning a higher pick means they are ideal trading partners. A buyout of Niemi is $1.5M cap hit, which they can definitely manage, but if they want to ditch him the cost wont be a high high pick

There are other franchises looking to dump goalies, Dallas isnt the only one

This. Both Niemi/Lehtonen only have a year left, let all 3 battle, send the bad one (lehtonen) down to the minors, have a terrible cap for a year then it's done by the summer. I get Jim Nill said they need to get rid of one, but that could mean anything.
If I were the GM, with the pieces Dallas has, you take Nico/Nolan and just have a bad salary situation for a year, get both goalies off the books, then continue on your business.

I don't see Dallas getting rid of this pick, they have some holes they need filled, even on forward

Tanev and Sven are to old.

Nico and Nolan are the only 1c available with floors of 2c. The next tier off prospects is b grade at best.

You have to pay for quality. Sven is a bum... just another little European princess... no grit.

I know some here fall in love with the top 60 each year but there are only going to be a half dozen 100 game players out of this draft... in my and most scouts opinion. At this time of year the rhetoric is pushed that they are all good, that is a lie.
Give me a sure thing top 6 C over a question mark who might not even make the nhl any day of the week. Then use 5ov to roll the dice and hope you can round out your future d core.

If you feel like over valuing or team then switch the 3ov with the 5ov and end up with 2 and 3 ov. Draft our new twins this year and our defensemen next year.

Sven's 24. Just entering his prime.
I don't buy this poop that somehow this is such a bad draft, I've watched a lot of tape and a lot of these kids play live. There is some excellent talent in the first round. Just not as much as other years, but dont take it too far.

I'd bet more than 6 in the first round play 100+, let alone the whole draft
