A 2 year deal fits really well into our cap structure.
But he’s going to fall off the map at some point. I’d bet on one more 45 to 50 point season. Not sure he has 2 left in him. - Tumbleweed
I bet he retires. Bad injuries for a guy who is 37.

Thats why they have the best "capologists" in the NHL working in Leaf Land. They will sign all three longer term and have gaps of 1,2,3 years as others develop. We only got a glimpse of Kapenen, not as talented as Nylander, but bigger, hits and will be a solid player. Moving forward, keep the core and move pieces as they maximize their market value as trade chips for d-men or any other need. - winsix

I don't want Eberle for 6 million, even for only 2 more years.
Would rather trade Bozak for futures to be honest. He was a valuable piece last year, so if the Leafs are contending for a playoff spot next year I could see them keeping Bozak and letting him walk next summer as a UFA. - Aetherial

Toews and kane deals were all ufa years. Plus they were paid for SC wins.
Tarasenko seems like a better comparable to me. - Tumbleweed
While I agree that the money Toews and Kane got were on the high side, Taresenko as a very talented 16th overall pick should not be compared to Matthews at all. McDavid and to an extent Eichel will set the price in his first big deal for Matthews. Depending on Matthews production, he will earn based on those two. Marner and Nylander can expect significantly less than the big dog in the house.

No way he retires before he knows he can't walk (even then, he can call in Shea Weber to show him where the wheelchairs are). |

Ken Holland tried to stick a policy of only forking out money for offensive defensemen. His philosophy was that strictly shut-down guys were much easier to find.
Detroit sucks now... but they had a LONG run of success. - Aetherial
He did make one huge blunder, Rafalski is one of the richests NHL players of all-time, thanks to Holland. Not bad for an undrafted undersize d-man, that could score a bit, but by all accounts was a middle of the road player.

what is the leafs RW depth? Nino nederlander should be on the radar
|
|
|
|
Yes I did, I could have said Brad Park, Chris Letang, Scott Niedermeyer, Nicklas Lidstrom, Doug Harvey, Drew Doughty and a host of others as well. Defensive defensemen don't push the needle for me the way that guys that can pass and carry the puck and score do. I consider them 3-4 guys, not 1-2 guys. - winsix
Pretty much all of those guys had a shutdown type near them that allowed them more freedom to put up the bigger more impressive numbers. When Nieds was a Devil, opposing players were a lot more afraid to go to Daneykos side of the ice than his. Ditto for Lidstrom and Kronwall etc. You may only value them as 3-4 guys, but that is because you only notice offensive numbers. There is way more to the position than that. |

bingo....
gotta luv the Slava Duris bucket... he must have had quite the "do" under that thing... or he brought all of his possessions with him from Czechoslovakia back in the day... and kept them under there at all times. |

Look at the past 10 or so cup winners, look at the salaries and ice times of the d-man. Which category do the top salary/ice time leaders fall in offensive or defensive? I would think its not close. How much did Detroit pay Kronwall relative to Lidstrom, Daneykos relative to Neidermeyer? Who's to say a good coach couldn't turn a marginal player/defender into an excellent defensive defensemen?

exactly... that's why (I believe) they should move JvR prior to the upcoming expansion/draft/FA period.... while he still is a relatively cheap commodity and had a good-very good season... trade him while he has value and can return something in a hockey trade.
gotta think that Isles look to add a few pieces up-front - potentially at the expense of their defense core... and JvR being a good old NJ boy would be close to home.
or keep him and "force" him to sign a reasonable deal... |

never liked the Goring helmet... although have to have mad respect for it.... as it has absolutely zero mirror appeal.
I was always a fan of the Stan Makita / Lanny MacDonald bucket (makes me laugh every time Lanny's in an old-timers game... same bucket).... and I absolutely loved the Dave Dunn (now there's one you'll have to look up).

No way would I want to give up a 1st round for Nino. Maybe 1 prospect and a 4th round.
Minnesota got him for Cal Clutterbuck and a 3rd round pick (70th overall) granted he wasn't playing very well on the island at all. |

Dave Dunn was pretty good, Peter Ihnacak was better. And his first interview was the funniest of all time. Went something like this:
Dave Hodge: So how does it feel to be a Leaf?
Peter Inhacak : YAAAH, I Try!
Dave Hodge: So Peter, how does your family like it here in Canada?
Peter Inhacak : YAAAH, I Try!
Dave Hodge: Peter how do you like the North American game?
Peter Inhacak : YAAAH, I Try!
