His lack offensive acumen is hardly a hidden fact. Check out his qualcomp type numbers if you get a chance. Guy is a beast of a shutdown dman and has a pronounced mean streak. Mcdavid has almost literally nothing to do with how he handles the blueline, and if anything he makes Mcdavids life easier because the puck doesn't often spend time in their own zone when he's on the ice.

I've heard similar things about Tanev from Nucks fans when they suggest we trade Nylander or Matthews for Tanev. Shutdown d-men - rather subjective for my liking. I would rather have a d-man along the lines of a Paul Coffey, Bobby Orr, Larry Robinson than a Bill White, Rod Languay or Dave Burrows. And for all his warts, Hall was Oilers leading scorer, was good for 65-75 points and I wouldn't have done that deal.

has anyone looked at how our cap will look for signing Matthews/Marner/Nylander after we pay 6.5 for Alzner for 7 years?

Oh wait, never mind, only two of Matthews/Marner/Nylander will have to be re-signed since the other one will be traded to Vancouver for Tanev.

- Aetherial

this is OF COURSE true... and we all know that Matthews and whoever is left will of course get league max contracts... because that is what Uncle Lou does....

so we're paying Alzner north of 6M... and then acquiring Tanev for a young elite forward (and of course the Leafs will have to throw in several pics).... and then eventually sign Tanev to a 7x6M deal as well?

this is awesome.

Can't believe people are still letting Eberle ride the highs of a reputation earned in a tournament a decade ago.

so oilers fans were expecting a player play everyday like he did for a few games during a month long tourney?

Oh.

- Fakepartofme

Yeah that's exactly what I said.

Pretty sure we were expecting more than 2 assists.

ah yes the falling down goal. Well to some extent Kapanan had a similar bump in hype after his WJ clutch goal, luckily he followed that up with a good playoff performance for the most part in his rookie year.

That's just the way the NHL is, some players are hyped like crazy

Since it didnt really work out for Edmonton with David Diehyrnez we can trade them Bozak for Eberle

You do realize that you named 3 of the best defencemen in history right?

Nobody was doing that. We were hoping that playoff hockey would revive his knack for clutch goal scoring.

Nobody is letting him ride anything. Edmonton fans are calling for his head.

as much as i wouldn't miss bozak, our C depth is so thin and i don't see many good options to replace him.

Bonino?

Yes I did, I could have said Brad Park, Chris Letang, Scott Niedermeyer, Nicklas Lidstrom, Doug Harvey, Drew Doughty and a host of others as well. Defensive defensemen don't push the needle for me the way that guys that can pass and carry the puck and score do. I consider them 3-4 guys, not 1-2 guys.

We won't have any cap space after Tanev re-signs and we sign Alzner

If the cap remains flat, I think you can probably say the bar was already set by Toews and Kane.

It is very possible that if all 3 continue to progress, we won't be able to afford all 3 or at least maybe we shouldn't, if our defense is still a problem.

Ken Holland tried to stick a policy of only forking out money for offensive defensemen. His philosophy was that strictly shut-down guys were much easier to find.

Detroit sucks now... but they had a LONG run of success.

A 2 year deal fits really well into our cap structure.

But he’s going to fall off the map at some point. I’d bet on one more 45 to 50 point season. Not sure he has 2 left in him.

Toews and kane deals were all ufa years. Plus they were paid for SC wins.

Tarasenko seems like a better comparable to me.

I don't want Eberle for 6 million, even for only 2 more years.

Would rather trade Bozak for futures to be honest. He was a valuable piece last year, so if the Leafs are contending for a playoff spot next year I could see them keeping Bozak and letting him walk next summer as a UFA.

Leafs are trading Bozak and Kapanen for Theodore and then signing Joe Thornton.

Thats why they have the best "capologists" in the NHL working in Leaf Land. They will sign all three longer term and have gaps of 1,2,3 years as others develop. We only got a glimpse of Kapenen, not as talented as Nylander, but bigger, hits and will be a solid player. Moving forward, keep the core and move pieces as they maximize their market value as trade chips for d-men or any other need.

No.

They are willing to go well over 6 on a long term deal for Alzner.

Lou bumped his head over the weekend.
