Bet a guy like Chayka will try to take Bieksa + pick or prospect - AdamFrench
Agree that is a possibility - still does not clear up all issues, they can protect 7 forwards, 3 d-men and a goalie, or 8 skaters and a goalie. With that lineup Manson is very hard to protect even if Bieksa is gone. With the way Silfverberg is playing now, hard to imagine Murray not protecting him, ditto for Rakell

Isn't the 35+ rule only for players that sign new contracts when they're 35 years or older? - TheMussel
Kevin Bieksa is signed to a 35-plus contract, and therefore does not receive a cap hit benefit from this buyout
He is 35 years old at the date of the buyout
Salary remaining: $4,000,000

Mike Augello: Leafs Target of Opportunity #1 – Josh Manson - mikeinbuffalo
I can easily get on board with Manson, although only seen him in a limited sample size...but what will the cost be? Right shot, plays with some snarl, fits the age demographic...gotta imagine Leafs won't be the only club bidding on his services.
Leafs need a D that can boom a point shot too; weakness of an otherwise lethal PP unit. Does Manson fit that bill? |

Have a look at their lineup, they will be making moves.
If they protect 4 d-man - Bieksa,Fowler,Lindholm,Vatanen (Biesksa must be protected unless he waves his NTC - and why would he? - live in California on a very good team)
Forwards - Getzlaf,Perry,Kessler,Silfverberg,Rakell,Cogliano, Goalie - Gibson. Its not only a d-man they will expose, they will need to expose at least one, probably two very good forwards. Moves coming. - winsix
So send JVR to ANA for Bieksa and Manson.
Cap works out.
Leafs could use Bieksa on the bottom pair, as a 7th.
if it doesn't work out, it's off to Robidas Island. |

we'd be forced into 4/4 protection.
if jvr is out, i'm not all that fussed about only protecting 4 forwards. but taking back stoner instead of bieksa would be a better fit imo. |

NMC would require protection...unless he waives it to go to vegas |

He has a NMC, I don't think they can unless he waives. |

If he is traded to Toronto w/ Manson, does that mean his NMC was already waived and is no longer valid because of the accepted trade to Leafs? |

I think the NMC would only get waived if the trade happened before it goes into effect. ie. PK Subban to Nashville. |

I think the NTC is in effect for the duration of the contract, regardless if the player waives or not.
Either way, I think Bieksa would welcome a trade to Toronto. |

sort of. beiksa's stays with him because it is already in effect. he has to waive it.
tanev's ntc can be nixed if we trade for him; because it is not in effect yet. |

It works though.
ELC's are protected.
Toronto protects
Kadri
Bozak
Komarov
Manson
Bieksa
Rielly
Zaitzev
Gardiner
Andersen
Also, a deal could be in place for McPhee to take someone like Eric Fehr, or Ben Smith in the expansion draft. Send them the OTT #2 to coerce McPhee to take one of those guys. |

I agree, stoner easier to move to Robidas Island and does not require protection. Question though, if Bieksa were to waive his NTC to move to TO (unlikely IMO) would he still require protection?

you guys would be smart to get a guy like Tanev before his NMC kicks in. I think you should also take advantage of who the Canucks GM is right now and his trade history. The trade honestly makes sense for both teams. |

I think Tanev on the Leafs makes sense but it's the return to Vancouver most seem not to agree about.
Vancouver fans expect good assets coming back while many here are only willing to give away spare parts 4th rounders. |

How many years Bieksa have left.
He'd be an idea 4,5,6. no?

I do find it both wonderful and frightening that the Leafs currently have only two defencemen worth protecting in the upcoming expansion draft.
But it does put us in a strong position leading up to the expansion draft for tradesies.
Get 'er done, Lou.
Get Lou a sandwich, Kyle.
