Don't those 2 statements slightly contradict each other? By your 3/4 year rule, we should reserve judgement on JV until the end of next season - NorthNuck

I'll give him this, he was saddled with an aged lineup and those damn movement clauses when he got to Vancouver. His greatest downfall is wasting the first three years of his tenure trying to compete instead of rebuilding.
In my humble opinion it takes some time to develop the kids you've drafted, unless you pick really really well, which he didn't do his first year, and it's hurt the organization.
To me it takes three to four years to see what you've got in a draft pick. Unless you're picking first overall of course. - LeftCoaster
Yup
We should have gotten the 10th overall pick in 2014 instead of all that other junk |

I agree with the Gilman remark and the nhl screwing is on the Lou contract. Can you believe we could get hot with any 8m recapture penalty... Such bs - Pres.cup
We will be stuck with the recapture only to have the rules changed the following year to accomodate Hossa's deal.

Sorry I think I misread, you said he didn't draft extremely well, and I took that to mean you were saying he drafted poorly followed by "we shouldn't judge until at least 3/4 years later - NorthNuck
Well, let me put it this way, Jake isn't a total write-off but he's entering his fourth year since being drafted. Meaning he's already completed three playing years. If I say it takes three to four years to determine what you've got in a draft pick doesn't he fall within that three to four years? |

I disagree, but there may be some truth to that. And at least I know how to spell and use "a lot" in the proper context |

I don't like overpaying...especially when the team isn't contending. I'm talking about contracts and trades. The reason why the team was/is such a mess is the lack of assets with real value that other teams covet. So to me the goal is to maximize cap space/assets as much as possible(squeeze very bit of juice out of the lemon) to build back up a pool of younger/valuable/coveted assets. I flat out didn't see the logic behind a lot of moves he's made and don't think Benning's made the best use of the cap space and assets that he's had to work with.
It's just an opinion. - Nucker101
I get it. To me, you're just unhappy they didn't commit to rebuilding. They spent 3 years "retooling" spending to the cap thinking this was a potential playoff team. Again, to me that imperative comes from the very top, not from JB. I completely agree with the part I've bolded, but to me that is a rebuild and not a retool. |

Not entirely.
The Vrbata deal was a fine re-tool move, short term, dollar amount was decent. I could live with it. Same with targeting Bonino in the Kesler package, a decent middle 6 centre on a great contract. It gets muddy after that |

He'll sell jerseys. It's a business right....
Frankly i don't care how bad we are or who is signed. I like the Eriksson deal. And gudbranson and Sutter.
We were the best team in the league for 4 or 5 years... this is the consequence of success. People say, look at Chicago, they've been good for a decade. They were the laughing stock of the league for the decade previous to that. Then they got Toews and kane.
We sucked inn the 90s drafted the twins, the West coast express dominated in the 2000s them the twins kept success afloat info the mid teens. That's allot of success off of very little failure.
Rip Luc, he would habe been a stud and changed our history.
In the 20's we'll be relevant again. I can live with that.

Has the JB killed the team with LE and Sutter (Sbisa + DD) contracts debate ended?
What about the Sutter sucks for his play and playing time sulking?
Have we accepted the Sedins aren't going anywhere but it's okay we will suck because of them too?
Anything more to complain about what happned and why there is a bleak future for years ahead? |

He did inherit the team at the perfect time to rebuild. One of McDavid or Eichel would have looked very good in a Canucks jersey |

I think that once those repcapture penalties start to become reality that the league will waive them. I saw that some teams could be hit with like a one year charge of 20 million. Think it was Nashville with Weber. A lot of teams are looking at 8-10 mil charges.
A lot like how NJ never actually lost their draft pick for the Kovalchuk contract. |

NHL and team fairness is like how they apply player safety suspensions. |

Nah. Because its going to be a hard sell to Nashville, who looks to be good for a while, that "hey, you guys gotta sell off 20 million in players for one year because of a rule we grandfathered in"
You kill a fanbase, a franchise and essentially restart all the goodwill and work they'd have done.
Are they going to make Chicago trade off Kane because a one year or two year charge because of Hossa or Seabrook? Detroit is going to have to sell off assets because of Zetterberg?
I just don't see the league actually pressing on this, especially since now they have the contract year cap. They're already basically letting NJ off the hook this summer for Kovalchuk. |
