i'm not looking for them to do to much and there's a big piece of me that would like to see what this team as mostly constructed would do under a different coach..."mostly" because they really need to move a contract or two and we'll probably be seeing plenty of guhle and (probably) antipin on the blueline

let's put it this way, botterill has seen a lot of alzner...any decision he makes on him will be well researched using both the eye test and analytics
- Michael Pachla

That's a good point

We're probably all arguing about him for nothing though
I think we should be able to trade for a better defenseman anyways

Any free agent defenseman should only be explored if we can't make a deal imo
I happen to like Alzner, but only at the right price & term
I'd rather go with McCabe again with Risto if we have to overpay Alzner

EIchel is a future #1 Centre. ROR is a solid #2. A great #3 Centre on a good team. The problem is that he makes 7.5M and has modest numbers. I don't know if you can draft Reinhart second overall then play him on the third line.
The biggest issues remain D and overall depth. They need Moulson and Ennis to start earning their dough

- BernardShakey

Pens won a Cup with Jordan Staal as their 3C
And last year won with Kessel on their 3rd line
And he is again this year

There's no reason Reinhart cant play 3C
With him being on the top PP unit, he'll still get plenty of icetime
It would actually allow us to play the 3rd line more,
and keep from overplaying O'Reilly so much

Everyone in the league who we have any chance to get, and all our prospects, and all the free agents we might target - they all suck. And data.

Hahaha
Well it's not like Karlsson or Hedman are getting traded to us

We should be able to trade for at least 1 solid top4 guy
If we can trade for 2, then we'll be in great shape imo
Especially if we avoid giving up Sam or Kane

high danger scoring chances against he ranks towards the bottom

according to that chart he saw most of his time with carlson and niskanen

i assume who they were pslaying against becomes irrelevant when you factor in 82 games and the fact that he was playing for the best team in the league, or close to it.

- Sabresfan-365

It is of the most relevant who Alzner was playing against, as well as the situations.
Generally, defensively solid D-men are usually given a ton of D-zone starts, play PK, and if smart force the opposition to the outside for shots far out.
Therefore, it doesn't surprise me that shots against are high and shots for are low. It is the result of the situation they play.

i saw opponent and thought he meant the team. Lindholm and tanev play the same role, but effectively keep shots to the outside (far better than alzner) and quickly turn defence into offence.

How many times this year were we stuck in our own end for way too long with it ending up in our net or having to ice the puck?

If he can get rid of 2 d-men i will call it a success, let alone add a top 4 guy

What's wrong with rolling 3 lines that are strong offensively and play more in the other teams zone then their own?
- kingcong39

With how the NHL is now he would just be wasted away on the 3rd line ..

when you can sign a much cheaper player with same stats

While I agree with having D who can move the puck out of the zone, and feed the O with passes while they're on the move...I still believe you need a mix of D types and a stay at home guy isn't a bad thing as it allows his O-capable partner to jump into the play. I don't want a whole squad of stay at home, but 1 or 2 ain't bad when you have 5 or 6 more highly skilled O types

What's the question ? I would rather trade him for a number 1D then waste him on the 3rd line When you can sign a person for 1m or 2

He's not a center anyways so it's a moot point.

He doesn't skate well enough. He's Cody Hodgson at center

I agree, i just want that d-man to be good at that role. my point is even though alzner has been given that title based on reputation he hasnt actually been that kind of player.

Id rather make a push for tanev

My memory is likely bad but I remember Hodgson being a horrible skater and I don't see Reinhart as a horrible skater.
