I'd take Ward over some of the other names being tossed around, such as Halak.
- bmeltzer

Interesting. Canes fans were clamoring for Halak as the year went on.

Granted, one year at only $3.3 million isn't the end of the world, though you're getting a back-up goalie.

I don't think either is a bad option to explore. If they're going to take on a reclamation project goaltender they may as well try to trade one of their excess over paid forwards in exchange. I think moving Read for either one would work out for the two teams involved.

I think there can be better and cheaper options than guys like halak. Ward is neuvirth 2.0 which again guarantees we don't take our shot at playoffs seriously would be some lucky bounces a long the road to get there. I've long standing said I want grubauer he's a rfa and I see him along the lines of Talbot Jones etc.

I'd explore Grubauer and Raanta as well but the cost will be higher and there is no opportunity to move an over paid forward contact. They need to trade a few players and Read is at the top of that list. I'd use a temporary surplus to fill a temporary need.

I don't see any comparisons between Neuvirth and Ward. Both have had completely different careers.

Halak has more recent AHL experience, so he is a good mentor for our young goalies

And he is from the same country as Neuvirth

FWIW I dont think cheaper really matters much for next year. The team has cheap enough contracts that they won't be at the cap and they have too many players to take on contracts/salary in trades

Cheaper is a bonus. Not a requirement.

To the other quote about it costing something for grubauer we have no guarantee on any prospects. Having a guy to compete like bishop vasilevesky or Murray fleury is a good problem to have.

Lehtonen does not "suck". His first several years in Dallas, he was one of the NHL's more underrated goalies; in fact, the team MVP on those "Pesky Stars" teams with lots of vinegar but modest talent that annually missed the playoffs by a whisker due to lakc of sufficient scoring. The last few seasons have been inconsistent, though.

Say what you will about Niemi, but he has a Cup ring from Chicago and was a Vezina finalist in San Jose.

Not saying that either guy is the right one for the Flyers. But the Stars real issue the last couple years is that they played a spottier brand of team D than just about any team in the NHL -- yes, including the Flyers. The goalies were inconsistent and sometimes dragged down the team but it was more commonly the guys in front allowing 2-3 unstoppable goals before there'd be a stoppable one that leaked through.

Hitch will absolutely bring much better D structure to Dallas, and Bishop will benefit from it and probably get too much credit for it. If things had been left untouched otherwise, he'd have been set up to get too much blame for it when he fared similarly or only modestly better than the 1A/1B tandem the last couple years.

- bmeltzer

I may have used the term loosely. You have a better perspective. I forgot about that. My comment was a response to a silly trade. (Dallas needs to lose salary not add) Granted the play of the d has been bad. I don't get to see many Dallas game but the ones I have seen, the goal tending HAS been a problem. It's a very small sample size. I just see a couple of guys I late in their careersthat aren't really doing much. Of the two I would prefer Lehtonen.

Emery. Before that Bryz. In terms of a Cup winner as a starter, it's been awhile.

Resch got some starts in 80, him and Smith were splitting time. Before that, the last Flyer goalie to start for a Cup winner was Bernie

Resch split time with Smith in the season but didn't really play in the playoffs much. That was the last TRUE dynasty. Four cups in a row.
Saw the Flyers officially end it in 85, when the beat the Isles 1-0 on Illkas goal. Four Sutters in the hand shake line.
It is the only Flyers playoff game I have been to.

Great blog, interesting backread. Lots of good stuff today

To me, it's not even a choice -- Mason's clearly better than any goalie on the market, with Darling and Bishop gone, and even then I wasn't sure that Mason couldn't do what those two do

But it's not up to me, and while I will hope for the best, I sure don't feel like, as of today, that goaltending is going to be a strength. It's a big reason they didn't make the playoffs this year and I'm going to be absolutely sour if we're back to the "new goalie every 18 months" garbage that we've seen far too often with this franchise

Few alumni nights will solve all your worries. I hear there is a LeCavalier banner night.

I'd love to ask a question that I'd never get an answer for. How much advocating by the coaching staff has there been to re-sign VDV/Belle compared to Mason. We know the answer.

I'm posting nudes if Vegas takes Neuvirth, and the Flyers re-sign Mason.
