Who is the last goaltender to get a 6 year deal?
- johndewar

Reimer got 5 last year. Dubnyk got 6 the year before.

The term may seem extreme, but it keeps his cap hit below $5M. If Bishop is able to give them just league average goaltending over the duration of the deal, then it's probably something the Stars would happily sign up for.

The Flyers did not ride his ass into the ground. Mason ranked 24th, 17th, and 16th in the NHL in games played the last 3 NHL seasons.

First you state that if his demands are too high it makes sense not to sign him, then you state they rode him into the ground and drove him out of town.

While I agree that nutter is being a little crazy, I think there is some validity to the Flyers overplaying Mason. His overall starts aren't high, but a lot of that has to do with injuries or the backup getting hot. It's not like Mason was consistently getting 3 out of every 4 games. He had stretches where he didn't play for weeks on end then had stretches where he started 10+ games in a row. We'll never know if the injuries were the result of over-usage, but I would guess they played a part.

Bishop also got an NMC for all six years, and a NTC for the last half of the deal.

Overheard in the Dallas Stars offices Guys, will this signing allow us to be average? If yes, let's do it. Average rules!

When compared to a lot of NHL starters I don't think it is valid. If you asked Mason he'd probably prefer to play even more. I think if there is any valid criticism towards goalie usage it is about lack of a consistency. I think any goalie would prefer a stable rotation. It's hard to remain consistent when not playing in long stretches. If Mason has an issue with how he was used, I would speculate that it's based on that and not on over usage.

It is still, in this market, a massive overpayment for a goalie

Yeah. He's probably not much more valuable than Mason and will probably be paid 3x as much.

I just get the feeling they were in a Bryz type situation where management or owner just wanted to take care of goaltending no matter what the cost.

why would one need a NTC if they have a NMC for all 6 years?

Per the link, it's full NMC first three years and modified NMC/NTC second three years. (unconfirmed though)

So what happens to Niemi/Lehtonen? I doubt Vegas will take either one, they may have to buy one out or retain salary and still take pennies on the dollar in return.

I think a lot depends on expectations. If the expectation is that Bishop will be a top 5-10 goalie for most of the deal, then I think the Stars will be disappointed. If they're hoping for a baseline of average goaltending, then I expect them to be fine with it.

They're relatively young, but their window to win is now, so I get the move. Would I have made it? No. I don't value goaltending enough to take a risk like that. I just don't think the deal is as bad as people make it out to be. Seems like everyone assumes Bishop will be bad or something. How much is league average goaltending worth?

The Flyers aren't contending so they have the luxury of waiting things out and seeing what presents itself in FA. The Stars want to win now, so they don't have that luxury.

The universe corrects its hatred of the Flyers:

We get Niemi, he gets us to SC we face Chicago and win with this year's #2, scoring an awful bad angle goal to win it all....#AhhhhFantasyland

I agree with the main premise of your post about what spot the Stars are in. I disagree however that the Stars made this move hoping for baseline average goaltending. I'd bet they are hoping for far more than that. They just made a 29.5 M investment.
